Biography

He was born half dead, and at the age of seven, falling from a tree, he broke his head so much that the night was without signs of life. From an early age he had a desire for solitude, he loved to attend temples. Having received a home education, at the age of 12 he was brought by his parents to St. Petersburg to the house of the merchant P.V. Lesnikov, where his elder brother Makariy, who was later the schema of the Sergius Desert, was already there. A year later he was transferred to another merchant's house, where he stayed for six years; then was made clerk of Lesnikov. At this time, he had the thought of a monastery. In December 1833, Ivan Vasilievich met with Ignatius Brianchaninov and was immediately admitted to the Brotherhood of the Trinity-Sergius Desert [1] .

In January 1834, Ivan Vasilyevich Malyshev, together with Archimandrite Ignatius and Mikhail Chikhachev, arrived in the Desert and began his spiritual feat here. Archimandrite Ignatius (Bryanchaninov) left Ivan Vasilievich as his cell attendant, accustoming him to the diligent and meek fulfillment of obedience. When his penchant for painting was discovered, Ignatius Brianchaninov suggested that he study at the Academy of Arts . Here he studied, as he himself testifies in his autobiography (see abstract — No. 6087. Ignatius. Autobiography. (Inaccessible link) ), under M. I. Scotti , K. P. Bryullov , A. E. Egorov [2] [3 ] ] . At the same time, his firmness appeared in matters of faith - in disputes with A. G. Ukhtomsky about monasticism [4] .

In 1840, I.V. Malyshev was tonsured a Riasophore with the name Ignatius; in 1842 - into the mantle , with the same name; in 1844 - became a hieromonk [5] .

In 1848, the mother of Ignatius (Malysheva) died. By this time, his two brothers were already in the Desert: the eldest - Makarii and the younger - Peter, later Hieromonk Plato, the sacristy of the Desert [6] .

In 1854, Hieromonk Ignatius was appointed chief manager of the restructuring of the Church of St. Sergius . At the insistence of Ignatius, the main iconostasis was made according to the drawing of A. M. Gornostaev from porphyry, marble, malachite, lapis lazuli and semiprecious stones. At the same time, Ignatius did not regret to part with the picture of K. Bryullov (view of the shroud) [7] .

On April 15 (27), 1857 , Ignatius Malyshev was appointed governor of the Desert. A few months later, Archimandrite Ignatius Brianchaninov was consecrated bishop, and in the rector of the Desert, he recommended her deputy. Ignatius (Malyshev) was appointed rector of the Trinity-Sergius desert by decree of the Holy Synod No. 761 of October 30 ( November 12 ), 1857 . November 17 (29), 1857 , in the Kazan Cathedral, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite [8] .

Archimandrite Ignatius (Malyshev) did a lot for the monastery over 40 years of his ministry as rector of the Trinity Sergius Desert (1857-1897). If the previous abbot (1834-1857) Ignatius (Bryanchaninov) gave a lot of effort to nurture the monastic brethren, then his successor, preserving and increasing the spiritual wealth of the monastery, decorated the appearance of the Sergius Desert with an architectural ensemble. There were seven churches on the territory of the monastery : the Holy Trinity, the Monk Sergius of Radonezh, the Resurrection of Christ, the holy martyr Valerian (Zubovskaya), St. Gregory the Theologian (Kushelevskaya), the Intercession of the Holy Virgin (Kochubeyevskaya), the holy martyr Savva Stratilatov and Shish - at the monastery gates, the Mother of God of Tikhvin (with reverence), Rudnenskaya - on the banks of the Jordan Pond in the eastern part of the monastery [9] .

The good organization of the life and economy of the monastery under Archimandrite Ignatius made it possible to carry out wide charitable activities. Since 1866, 1,000 rubles were donated annually to the maintenance of the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary and Theological School of Deserts. Charitable activities of the Desert in the seventies became known abroad. Upon learning of the construction of a new church in Sarajevo (Bosnia), Archimandrite Ignatius donated 73 icons for the iconostasis there, an altar cross and gonfalons there in the spring of 1871. For more than 2 years, the priest himself and the monastery artists participated in the writing of the icons (it is sometimes indicated [10] that the icons were painted for the Church of the Resurrection of Christ built (1872–1876) by the architect A. A. Parland in the monastery itself). The charitable activities of Archimandrite Ignatius were also appreciated by Russia - the Order of St. Vladimir was granted, and Bosnia - Prince of Montenegro, Nikolay sent him the Order of St. Daniel of the 2nd degree [11] [8] .

In 1875, archimandrite Ignatius completed the biography of the Russian saints of the millennium of Russia, located over the centuries [12] .

During the war with Turkey , in 1877-1878, at the suggestion of the rector in the Sergius desert, a hospital was built with a church consecrated on January 29 ( February 10 ), 1878 [8] .

In 1881, Archimandrite Ignatius was awarded the title of Honorary Free Community of the Academy of Arts. During the second contest in the temple in memory of the murdered Alexander II, “suddenly an idea dawned on him to draw a draft,” and then came the confidence, “internal pledge” that his proposal would be accepted. To develop the project, Ignatius turned to A. A. Parland , whom he knew closely from his joint work in the Trinity-Sergius desert [13] . The project of Alfred Parland and Archimandrite Ignatius (Malyshev) was approved [14] by Emperor Alexander III on July 29 ( August 10 ), 1883 , subject to its subsequent refinement. The construction of the temple lasted 24 years; an engraving board with an inscription testifying to the authorship of archimandrite Ignatius was put at its base [13] ; he was consecrated on August 6 (19), 1907 , 10 years after the death of one of the authors [15] .

In 1882, in connection with the 25th anniversary of the reign, Archimandrite Ignatius was awarded the Order of St. Anna of the 1st degree [16] .

Shortly before his death, one of the students of Ignatius reminded him of the approaching 40th anniversary of the abbot, to which there was an answer:
“It would be like with me, like with bear hunters: 39 he will kill, but he will not cope with the fortieth” [17] .

Archimandrite Ignatius died on May 16 (28), 1897 (and on the 15th evening, according to the old style, he was visited by John of Kronstadt [18] ) and was buried in the Desert , in the Church of the Resurrection of Christ. Currently, his remains are buried in the church of St. Sergius, where they were transferred to the year of the century since the day of his repose [10] .
