Kumano ( 熊 野 市 ) is a city in Japan in Mie Prefecture . In 2003, the population of the city was estimated at 20,370 people, the area of the city - 259.96 km². The status of a big city was assigned on November 3, 1954.

Content
Geographical position
The city is located on the Pacific coast on the Kii Peninsula. Included in the Yoshino-Kumano National Park ( jap. ). In the vicinity of the city, there are three famous Shinto shrines - Kumano-Hongu-taisha ( Jap. 熊 野 本 宮 大 社 ), Kumano-Nati-taisha ( Jap. 熊 野 那 智 大 社 ) and Kumano-Hayatama-taisha ( Jap. 熊 野 社 社 大 .
History
In the Middle Ages, Kumano was on the path of the pilgrimage trails of Kumano-kodo - from the monasteries of the sacred mountain Koya-san through hills and forests to Shinto shrines in the vicinity of Kumano, and further to the holy sites of Ise . The pilgrimage tradition has survived to this day, the pilgrimage trails are equipped with shelters, and bus lines are connected to the intermediate pilgrimage points. The trails in the mountains and in the forest are often lined with stone.
Economics
An important place is occupied by tourism, trade and transport (serving pilgrims and tourists), as well as hydropower ( Nanairo HPP ( Japanese ) and Komori HPP ( Japanese }). The center of the agricultural region ( terraced rice farming and marine fishing).
