Youth and Education

Started skating in elementary school. The first time he saw a short track competition on TV at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , where one of his favorite Korean athletes, , took gold at a distance of 500 meters and silver at a distance of 1000 meters. The first coach of Ana was three-time Olympic short track champion Kim Ki-hoon .

Career

First Rewards

An won his first awards at the World Short Track Championships back in April 2002 in Montreal at the age of 16. Prior to that, he participated in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , but returned without awards (4th place at a distance of 1000 meters).

2006 Olympics

In the 2006 Winter Olympics, An won gold medals at distances of 1,500 meters and 1,000 meters. He set a new Olympic record - 1: 26,739 at a distance of 1,000 meters, ahead of teammate Lee Ho-Sook and rival Ono. Ahn also won gold in the men's relay at a distance of 5000 m along with teammates - Lee Ho-Sook, Seo Ho-Jin and Song Sook-Woo. He became the second Korean athlete who managed to win three gold medals during the Olympic Games alone (Jin Sung-Yu achieved this earlier that day). He also won a bronze medal at a distance of 500 m. Rarely taking a leading position throughout the race, in the first laps of the race An followed the tactics of pursuing leaders, then he tried to bypass the enemy in outer or inner radius (if possible) in two or three circles to the finish line. In the 5000m relay race at the 2006 Winter Olympics, An overtook the Canadian Olympic champion in the final lap and brought victory to Korea.

An Hyun-soo won a total of 4 medals in the 2006 games - an unprecedented result for any athlete in his sport. He is the first Korean to win 3 medals in the singles of the Winter Olympics [3] .

After the 2006 Olympics

Despite being disqualified in the finals of competitions at distances of 500 m and 3000 m at the World Championships 2006 in Minneapolis, An was able to claim the champion title thanks to victories at distances of 1000 and 1500 m and became the absolute world champion with 68 points, beating his compatriot Lee Ho - Bitch with 60 points.

Conflict

After the 2006 World Cup, An flew to South Korea. At Incheon International Airport, his father, Ahn Ki-won, had a falling out with the Vice President of the Korean Skating Union (KSU), claiming that the coach didn’t communicate with his son and conspired with other skaters to prevent him from winning the absolute champion title. .

The South Korean short track team was divided into two groups, in one of which Ana was coached by a female team coach due to a conflict with a male team coach. The tension increased so much that the skaters refused to dine in the same room, to sit next to each other in an airplane. Earlier, Ahn and Lee Ho-Suk visited the same training base together and even lived in the same room the previous year in the skating camp, but since then they rarely talked to each other.

An mentioned on his personal website that the pressure was so great that he was considering leaving the sport. In connection with this issue, the skating union said that starting next season, the team will be prepared by one head coach to prevent unhealthy rivalry [4] .

After conflict

At the World Championships held in Milan ( Italy ) from March 9 to March 11, 2007, Ahn won first place at a distance of 1000 m and a relay race of 5000 m with teammates, Song Si Bak, Song Queng Taeu and Kim Hyun Kon, and also won silver at 3,000 m and two bronze medals at 500 m and 1,500 m. He was the first person to win five world championships [5] .

An is the only male short track athlete to have won at least three consecutive world championships (winning five times in a row); Canadian skater Mark Gagnon won four times.

Injury at the start of the 2008 season

On January 16, 2008, the Korean Speed Skating Union (KSU) announced that Ahn injured his knee while encountering a guardrail during a team training session at the Korean Training Center in Tengyung. The hospital was diagnosed with a fracture of the knee joint.

KSU announced that due to injury, An will not compete in Quebec and Salt Lake City. It was also reported that he would not participate in the 2008 World Championships in Gangneung and the World Team Championships in Harbin, China. It became clear that due to an unexpected injury, An would not be able to defend her sixth world title and would give her compatriots the opportunity to fight for it (Lee Ho Sook, Song Koon Taek and Lee Seung Hong). After three operations, his rehabilitation period was supposed to be about 2-3 months [6] .

On September 5, 2008, Korean media reported that after an eight-month break, An returned to training, devoting two hours a day to physical recovery and skating, and five hours of rehabilitation and exercise. The article also reported that An expects to participate in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver [7] .

2010 Winter Olympics

In the South Korean national selection, which ultimately determined the team of the World Cup and the Olympics, An could not qualify, taking seventh place (for the selection he had to get into the top three).

Relocation to Russia

On August 15, 2011, the Russian Skating Union announced that, together with the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, they had applied to the Commission on Citizenship under the President of the Russian Federation to grant Russian citizenship An Hyun Su. As reported, An trained with the Russian team in June 2011, began to study the Russian language and was planning to move to Russia for permanent residence [8] [9] [10] .

An decided to obtain Russian citizenship in order to take part in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi as part of the Russian team. Ana's father stated that the decision was due to a lack of support from the South Korean Speed Skating Association [11] . Before moving to Russia, An did not know the Russian language, and he did not have relatives in Russia. He considered the possibility of moving to the United States, but chose Russia due to the fact that the process of obtaining Russian citizenship was much easier, also because Russia provided more acceptable and generally good conditions [12] . On December 26, 2011, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree granting An Hyun Su to Russian citizenship [13] . When changing citizenship, the skater took the name Victor An. An explained his choice of the name with three reasons [14] :

Firstly, the name Victor is associated with the word “victoria”, which means “victory”. It turns out symbolically, I want this name to bring me luck. Secondly, I know another Korean named Victor, who is very popular in Russia and well known in Korea - this is Viktor Tsoi . I would like to become as famous in Russia. And thirdly, they told me that Victor for Russian-speaking people is an easy name and quickly remembered.

Viktor An spoke of his move to Russia as follows: “In Russia, they offered me ideal conditions for training. Moving here is the best decision that I could make at that moment ” [15] .

At competitions, An represents Moscow , where he lives. Having received Russian citizenship, An became the only three-time champion of the Winter Olympic Games in Russia to continue his career.

In March 2012, at the Russian Championships in short track, he won the distances of 1000 and 3000 m, and also became the second at 1500 m [16] .

October 21, 2012 at the first stage of the World Cup 2012/2013 won at a distance of 1000 m, the first after an injury and a change of citizenship [17] . Then he won the World Cup in Nagoya (1000 m) [18] and Shanghai (1500 m) [19] .

At the 2013 World Championships in Debrecen, An won silver at a distance of 500 meters, and also became the second in the relay team of Russia. In the absolute championship, Victor took sixth place.

2014 Olympics

As part of the Russian national team at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Viktor became a bronze medalist at a distance of 1,500 m. He won a gold medal at a distance of 1,000 m [20] . The medal became the first gold of Russia in the short track at the Olympics. Later, he won two gold medals: at a distance of 500 m and in the relay team of Russia at 5000 m.

The reaction of the South Korean public

In South Korea, Ana’s participation in the 2014 Winter Olympics made a splash. After his victories in Sochi, the Korean media criticized the Union of Skaters of the Republic of Korea. The Minister of Sports and the President of South Korea promised to take steps in the preparation for the 2018 Olympic Games to eradicate corruption and civil strife in this organization, most likely the reasons for the emigration of the athlete. The Korean public generally supports Victor An [21] [22] .

After the 2014 Olympics

After the athlete’s career ends, An plans to train the Russian national short track team [23] [24] .

Ana was presented with a three-room apartment of 100 m2 in an elite residential building in St. Petersburg - the complex “Prince Alexander Nevsky” [25] .

In 2017, Victor An became the third at the European Championships in short track at a distance of 500 meters [26] .

In 2018, Victor An became the second at the European Championships in short track at a distance of 500 meters.

Suspension from participation in the Olympics 2018

In January 2018, Viktor An, without explanation, was not invited by the IOC to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . The athlete addressed an open letter to the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach [27]

Retirement

On September 5, 2018, Viktor An ended his sports career and left for Korea to study his daughter [28] .

In February 2019, Viktor An expressed a desire to speak at the Olympic Games in 2022 as part of the Russian team. [29]

Return to Big Sport

In August 2019, Victor An returned to Russia [30] [31] . On September 15, he won the first victory after returning, finishing first at a distance of 1000 meters at the Open Cup of the Russian Skating Union in Kolomna. [32] .

Personal life

Married to a Korean woman, U Na Ri ( cor. 우 나리 , b. 1984), who moved to Russia in 2013 and received Russian citizenship. Earlier, U Na Ri was a fan of Ana and was a member of one of the fan clubs. According to An, the presence and care of U Na Ri allowed him to fully adapt in Russia [33] [34] . There is a daughter, Jane An (born December 29, 2015) [35] .
