Abraham Katsenelson ( Hebrew אברהם קצנלסון , also Abraham Nisan Hebrew אברהם ניסן b. 1888 , Bobruisk , Minsk province , Russian Empire - May 18, 1956 , Israel ) - Zionist activist, one of the signatories of the declaration of independence Israel [2] .

Biography

Abraham Kantselson was born in 1888 in Bobruisk ( Russian Empire , now the Republic of Belarus ), in the family of Nisan ha-Kogen Katsenelson ( Merchant and public figure, relative of the Jewish teacher and writer Jacob Katsenelson [1] ) and Zelda Lena Rozovoiska, daughter of Rabbi Mordecai Leib Rozovsky.

Kantselson was not the only child in the family, besides him there were two more sisters: Frida and Rachel , wife of the 3rd President of Israel Zalman Shazar [3] . Also, Abraham had three brothers: Shmuel Kantselson, Reuven Kantselson and Joseph Katsenelson [4] .

Abraham studied at the header and gymnasium of Bobruisk, after which he studied Judaism, science and medicine at the universities of St. Petersburg and Moscow. In addition to the degree of Doctor of Medicine ( 1914 ), he holds a Bachelor of Science degree ( 1912 ).

During the First World War ( 1914 - 1918 ) he worked as a military doctor in the Russian army [5] . In 1917, between the two revolutions, Kantselson led the "Union of Jewish Soldiers on the Caucasus Front" , with only about ten thousand people [5] . Joseph Trumpeldor attracted Abraham Katzenelson to his activities. Trumpeldor was about to assemble a two hundred thousandth army of Jewish soldiers to help Britain fight the Turks in Palestine. [5]

In 1919, Katsenelson married Sime, the daughter of the doctor Zeev Kaplan [1] .

In 1919 and 1920 , he worked as director of the Zionist Committee of Eretz Yisrael in Istanbul [5] .

In 1921 - 1923, Abraham Katsenelson worked in the central office of Khatakhdut (association of organizations Ha-Poel ha-Tsair and Tseyrey Zion [6] ) in Vienna and Berlin .

In 1924, he repatriated to Palestine [1] . Between 1924 and 1930, Abraham Katsenelson served as director of the Department of Health at the Jewish Agency . Since 1931, he entered the Vaad Leumi [5] .

In May 1948, Katsenelson became one of those who signed the Declaration of Independence of Israel [2] . Between 1949 and 1950, he was a member of the Israeli delegation to the United Nations Assembly . In 1950, Abraham Katsenelson began working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel , and in November of the same year he was sent as an envoy to Stockholm ( Sweden ). In 1956, due to his state of health, he was forced to return to Israel, where he died on May 18, 1956 [5] [5] .

Abraham Katsenelson had two children: the son of Shmuel Katsenelson, and the daughter of Zeev Peled [1] .
