Self-coaching began in 1955 in the club Torpedo (Gorky) . Together with the torpedo bosses, the Boginovs went from the weakest league team (last place in the 1955 championship ) to the silver of the 1961 USSR championship and the 1961 USSR cup final. For the first time in the history of the USSR championships, a team from the periphery became the winner. It was thanks to Boginov that the first provincial troika appeared in the national team of the Soviet Union: Sakharovsky - Chistovsky - Khalaichev .
In 1963, Dmitry Nikolaevich decided to leave the club and led the newly created team Dynamo (Kiev) . Having assembled a team from scratch, in 5 years, the Boginov led him out of the second league to 9th place in the 1968 USSR Championship .
In 1973 he headed the "sinking" Moscow "Locomotive" , replacing the departed Anatoly Kostryukov , but could not save the club. He managed only to postpone the fall of the team in the standings, taking the 7th place with this club for three seasons in a row. After his departure, the fall of the team continued.
In 1976, on the basis of the Volga Automobile Plant , a new club was created - Torpedo (Togliatti) , which was assigned to head Dmitry Nikolayevich. In a short time, the Boginov assembled such famous hockey players as Zubarev, Gorodetsky, Zozin, Karpov, Vereshchagin and others. In the opening match of the season of the second allied league, October 16, 1976 , Togliatti Torpedo beat the already authoritative Magnitogorsk Metallurg at that time. In the first 10 matches, the torpedo team scored seven wins, with two draws and one loss. The team finished the season in 7th place. And the next season Torpedo finished in 3rd place, winning 34 victories with 13 defeats, reducing 7 matches to a draw. After the 1978 season, Dmitry Nikolaevich resigned, passing the club to his assistant, Valery Gushchin .
In 1979, Boginov headed the RSFSR Hockey Federation and worked in this position until retirement in 1987 .
In addition to club work, Dmitriy Nikolayevich in different years led the youth teams of the USSR, winning the Universiade in Turin and Innsbruck .
