The museum is located in the center of Athens near the northern slope of the Acropolis in Plaka district on Theorias Str. (Θεωρίας), 12 and Πανός.
History
The collection of objects of ancient and Byzantine art was laid by Pavel Kanelolopoulos and has several thousand items 3000 - 1200 BC. e on the XVII — XIX centuries., acquired by a collector from different sources. In 1976, the collection was transferred to the state.
The museum building is a mansion of the Mahalea family (Michalea), built in 1864 and acquired by the Greek government to house the collection.

The museum collection includes more than 6 thousand items, including more than 270 icons of Byzantine and post-Byzantine origin.
