High Kings of Arnor

The kings of Arnor through Amandil came from the Lords of Andunie , and from them, through the Silmarien , from the kings of Numenor . Elendil and Isildur were the High Kings of Arnor and Gondor , but after the reign of Isildur the kingdoms were divided, although the Northern Dynasty continued to use the title of High King Arnor.

Elendil

Father of Anarion and Isildur. Rules in 3320-3441 V.E.

Isildur

The son of Elendil, the brother of Anarion, the father of Valandil. Rules in 3441 V. В.. - 2 T. Имя. The name of Isildur is translated from Quenya as "servant of the moon."

Valandil

High King Arnor, reigned 2 to 249 T.E. His name apparently means "loyal Valar ." Valandil was born in 3430 V.E. and was the fourth son of Prince Isildur son of Elendil . His grandfather died fighting against Sauron , and his father, Isildur, having cut off Sauron’s finger with the Ring of Omnipotence , made the Dark Lord disengage. Later, the older brothers of Valandil were killed by orcs in the Iris Fields , as was Isildur himself. Valandil and his mother were in Rivendell when they heard news of his father’s death. After this misfortune, Valandil inherited the title of High King of the Dunedain .

Since Valandil was still a child at the time of the death of his father, he did not have power over Gondor , where Isildur left as his ruler his older nephew Meneldil . In any case, Valandil never attempted to claim the southern crown, thereby unknowingly reinforcing Meneldil's claims and dividing the kingdom. However, the title of High King remained with Valandil and his descendants. He spent the first eight years of his reign in Rivendell, where he was trained by Bishop Elrond . In 10, T.E. Valandil went to Arnor, where he took the scepter of Annuminas and power over the kingdom. In Annuminas, he lived peacefully until his death in 249 T.E. After his death, the throne was inherited by the son of Valandil, Eldakar.

Eldakar

Eldakar ( born Eldacar , translated from Quenya his name means "elven helmet". ) Was born in 87, reigned in 249-339. Do not confuse Eldakar with his famous namesake, the king of Gondor Eldakar .

The reign of Eldakar was calm and without any special events, he died in the year 339 of the Third Age . The heir to Eldakar was his son Arantar .

Arantar

Arantar ( Eng. Arantar - in translation from Quenya his name means “Lord of kings” ) was born in 185, reigned in 339-445.

Tarkil

Tarkil ( Eng. Tarcil , also written Tarkil ) was born in 280, ruled in 435-515. In The Story of the Lord of the Rings, it is mentioned that the word Tarkil was an early version of Aragorn 's nickname “dunadan” and meaning “tall man”. From here comes the orcish word " Tark ", meaning "Dunadan, Numenorean."

Tarondor

Tarondor ( Eng. Tarondor - in translation from Quenya his name means "royal stone" ) was born in 372, reigned in 515-602. Do not confuse Tarondor with his namesake from Gondor , who ruled much later.

Valandur

Valandur ( Eng. Valandur - in translation from Quenya his name means "servant of the valar" ) was born in 462, reigned in 602–652. He was killed in the war in 652, the exact circumstances of his death remain unknown.

Elendur

Elendur ( Eng. Elendur - translated from Quenya his name means "servant of the stars" ) was born in 552, reigned in 652-777.

Earendure

Earendur ( Eng. Eärendur - translated from Quenya his name means "servant of the sea" ) was born in 640, reigned in 777-861. The last king of the united Arnor. Earendur had three sons, they all made claims to the throne. After the civil war that erupted after the death of Earendur, Arnor was divided into three parts: Arthadine , Kardolan and Rudaur , but only the oldest dynasty of the kings of Arnor survived in Arthadain. The first king of Arthadine was the eldest son of Earendur, Amlight.

Kings of Artadine

Amlight

Amlight ( born Amlaith ) was born in 726, ruled in 861–946. The first king of Arthadine, the eldest son and heir to King Arnor, Earendur. The first from the northern dynasty, who took his name in Sindarin , and not in Quenya . Moved the capital from Annuminas to Fornost . Amlayt's rule was generally peaceful, with the exception of the constant cross-border conflicts with Kardolan and Rudaur .

Beleg

Beleg ( born Beleg ) was born in 811, ruled in 946-1029. During his reign west of the Misty Mountains , hobbits were first seen, most of them bore feet (during his migration to Eriador ). Also during the days of Beleg’s reign in Middle-earth (for the first time in the Third Age ), Sauron (in Mirkwood ) returned. It was named after the elf Beleg Kutalion , the great ranger Doriath .

Mallor

Mallor ( born Mallor ) was born in 895, reigned in 1029-1110. During his reign, the Istari arrived in Middle-earth from Valinor , but in those days their origin remained a mystery. Toward the end of Mallor’s reign, it became clear that the shadow that fell on Mirkwood stretches from Dol Guldur , but the presence of Sauron there remained unclear.

Kelefarn

Kelefarn ( born Celepharn ) was born in 979, ruled in 1110-1191. During his reign, the hobbits completely moved to Eriador , on the lands of Arnor. For the most part, these were foresters and hvats, who joined the bore-foot, who had already lived there since the time of Beleg, grandfather Kelefarn. At the same time, Gondor under King Atanatar II Alkarin reaches the peak of his power.

Celebrindor

Celebrindor ( born Celebrindor ), born in 1062, ruled in 1191–1272. The reign of Celebrindor was peaceful and calm, in particular, there was no friction between Artadine, Kardolan and Rudaur .

Malvegil

Malvegil (Synd. Malvegil - "Golden Sword") was born in 1144, ruled in 1272–1349. During his reign in the north of Rudaura , the state of Angmar was founded by the Witch-king , and evil began to penetrate into Arnor from there. A lot of evil people and orcs began to gather on both sides of the Misty Mountains , and Arthadine had to constantly monitor them.

Argeleb I

Argeleb I ( born Argeleb I ) was born in 1226, ruled in 1349-1356. Since at that time the Isildur dynasty was interrupted in the kingdoms of Kardolan and Rudaur , Argeleb made a claim to rule all Arnor, adding to his name the royal prefix Ar- as a sign of his dignity. Cardolan agreed with this claim, but Rudaur had already passed under the control of Angmar by that time and had not accepted it. Accordingly, Argeleb fortified the Windy Hills, on which stood the tower Amon Sul , but was killed in battle with the armies of Rudaura and Angmar.

Arveleg I

Arveleg I ( born Arveleg I ) was born in 1309, reigned in 1356-1409. He avenged the death of his father, dropping the orcs and people of Angmar with the help of troops from Cardolan and Lyndon . After this, Artadine and Kardolan kept watch for many years along the Windy Hills around Amon Sul , the Great Road and the lower course of the Mitaytel River. At the same time, Rivendell was besieged by the forces of Angmar.

Arveleg was killed in 1409, when the large army of Angmar suddenly broke through the defenses, capturing Kardolan and destroying the fortress tower on top of Amon Sul. Arveleg was killed in the fray, but the palantir Amon Sul was saved and carried off to Fornost . The last Dunedain Rudaura were completely destroyed, and he became territory dependent on Angmar, and Kardolan was plundered and ruined.

Arafor

Arafor ( born Araphor ) was born in 1391, ruled in 1409-1589. Despite the fact that Arafor ascended the throne as a teenager after the death of his father, he nevertheless managed to push the offensive forces of Angmar from Fornost and the Northern Hills with the help of the troops of Lord Cirdan of Lyndon. Dunedain refugees from Kardolan and Rudaura fortified themselves in the burial grounds and behind them in the Old Forest . Soon, Elrond also brought reinforcements from Lothlorien , crossing with the army of elves through the Misty Mountains , and the army of the Sorcerer King were thrown back. During these wars, many hobbit- captors fled from Eriador and returned to the Wasteland , becoming the river people from which Deagol and Smeagol came.

Argeleb II

Argeleb II ( born Argeleb II ) was born in 1473, ruled in 1589-1670. During his reign, the Great Plague reached Eriador , and most of the people of Cardolan died (including all the remaining Dunedain of this kingdom), especially in Minhiriath . The hobbits and other peoples of Arnor also suffered greatly, but the plague waned as they moved northward, and the northern regions of Artedine were hardly affected by it. Evil spirits sent by Angmar passed from Rudaura to Kardolan and settled in the Graves .

Perhaps it was precisely because of the fall in the population of Argeleb in 1600 that T.E. (the 1st year according to the calendar of Shira (L. Sh.)) Granted Shire to the hobbits. Previously, these lands were royal hunting grounds.

Arvegil

Arvegil ( born Arvegil ) was born in 1553, ruled in 1670-1743. During his reign, many of Arnor's hobbits moved to the Shire , which was granted to them by Arvegil's father, Argeleb II. On the whole, his reign was rather calm, since not only Arthadine, but also his enemies suffered from the Great Plague. However, the borders of the kingdom were no longer guarded as before, and evil continued to seep into Arthadine from Angmar .

Arveleg II

Arveleg II ( born Arveleg II ) was born in 1633, ruled in 1743-1813. During his reign, the war with Angmar resumed, as he recovered from the effects of the plague before Arthadine, reinforced by Easterlings and orcs on both sides of the Misty Mountains .

Arawal

Araval ( born Araval ) was born in 1711, reigned in 1813-1891. Arawal was a great diplomat and warrior; he renewed an alliance with the elves of Lindon and Imladris and reestablished contacts with the Southern Kingdom ( Gondor ). He also won a decisive victory over Angmar and, taking advantage of the lull in the war with Angmar, even tried to populate the deserted Kardolan with artedin colonists. However, deaths from the burial grounds got in his way, who killed part of the settlers, and frightened the rest so that they returned in panic to Arthadine. Thus, the plans of Arawal for the settlement of the Cardolan lands were not crowned with success.

Arafant

Arafant ( born Araphant ) was born in 1789, ruled in 1891-1964. It was during his reign that the famous fortune teller Malbeth the Seer spoke a prophecy about the fate of the king’s son, Arvedua.

Arafant continued his father’s policy of renewing contacts with Gondor and allied with his king Ondoger , which ultimately led to the marriage of his son Arvedua to the daughter of King Gondor Firiel. Four years later, Ondoher died in a battle with the People of the Wagon, and Arveduy tried to ascend the throne of Gondor, motivating the claim with his direct descent from Isildur and marriage to Firiel, who, according to the Numenor laws , was to become the ruling queen. However, this claim was rejected.

Arvedui

Arvedui ( born Arvedui ) was born in 1864, ruled in 1964-1975. He was the last king of Arthadine, which means his name, which his father, King Arafant, gave him at the direction of the foreteller Malbeth the Seer . Malbeth said this:

... Arvedui call him, for he will be the last in Arthadine. And there will be a choice to face the Dunedain, and if they choose something that will have less hope, then your son will change the name and become the king of a vast country. If not, then many troubles and many people's lives will pass before the Dunedain rise again and be united.

- Tolkien J.R. R. Lord of the Rings . Volume III "The Return of the King ." - Appendix A: Gondor and the heirs of Anarion

Arvedui married Firiel, daughter of King Gondor Ondoger , and when Ondoger died in a battle with the People of the Wagon, he made a claim to the throne . However, the governor Pelendur and Gondorsky refused to know him, and the people of Gondor elected a military leader from the side branch of the royal family Earnil to the throne .

Soon Arveduy became king of Artedain, but in 1974 Angmar inflicted a crushing blow on Artedain, taking the Fornost by storm. Arveduis with a small detachment covered the Arnorians' withdrawal to Lindon, after which he was forced to flee and hide in the old dwarf mines in the Blue Mountains . In Gondor, they found out about this, and King Earnil sent a fleet to the aid of Arthadine under the command of his son Earnur , but it was too late: Arthadine was defeated. The famine drove Arvedui to the north, to the icy bay of Forochel . Locals, the Lossot people (“snow people”), albeit with reluctance, helped the emaciated king.

Cirdan in 1975 sent the ship from Lyndon to Arvedui to the rescue, and, despite the warnings of the snowmen, the king set sail, although the Lossots advised to postpone the voyage before the ice melts. Before sailing, he gave his ring, the famous Ring of Barahir , to the leader of the Lossot people. Soon after sailing, the ship was crushed by ice, and Arveduy drowned with the palantirs Amon Sul and Annuminas , who were now lost forever, on the same ship. Soon after, the Gondor army under the command of Earnur destroyed Angmar with the help of the elves Cirdan and Elrond, as well as the surviving Artedain warriors, but neither Artedain nor Arnor existed anymore, the cities lay in ruins, the population of Eriador, except for the Highlands and the Shire, were only a few warriors . Soon Fornost was abandoned, and Tarbad was sick until, after the flood, the inhabitants left him.

Arveduy's son, Aranart , became the first of the Dunedain leaders when he abandoned the idea of rebuilding the Northern Kingdom. Despite the fall of the Northern Kingdom, the Isildour line did not break. Arvedui’s claim to the throne of Gondor was never forgotten by his descendants, although Aragorn put it forward only a millennium later.

Many thought that the direct line of the descendants of Anarion was interrupted, because Earnur did not leave offspring. However, in the veins of the descendants of Arveduy, blood flowed and the descendants of Anarion, thanks to his marriage to Firiel.

Malbeth's prophecy turned out to be true: Arveduy became the last king of Arnor, just as the line of kings of Gondor was interrupted with the disappearance of Earnur. Only at the end of the Third Age did King Aragorn Elessar unite the two states.

Kings of the United Kingdom

Elessar

Rules in 1-120 C.E. The first king of the Reunited Kingdom of Arnor and Gondor.

Eldarion

Eldarion ( quarter Eldarion ), ruled from 120 C.E. presumably until 220 C.E. Son of Aragorn and Arwen . There is no more information about his rule in the Tolkien legendary.
