Old Maine (until 1917, also Epiphany ) is an urban-type village in Russia , the administrative center of the Staromainsky district of the Ulyanovsk region .

It is located on the left bank of the Volga (on the Kuybyshevsky reservoir ), 68 km north-east of Ulyanovsk and 34 km north of Cherdakly station on the Ulyanovsk- Ufa railway line.

History
According to Ulyanovsk archaeologists, in the territory of the present Old Maina people have lived continuously from the 3rd - 4th centuries . The first came here Imenkovsky tribes . Imenkovskaya culture existed on the territory of the present Old Maina for about 400 years.
The next 5 centuries, the Volga Bulgars owned the local lands.
Then the Golden Horde conquers these lands. After the collapse of the horde, the lands depart to the Kazan Khanate .
In the second half of the 17th century, the first Russian settlement appeared here.
According to legend, the village of the Epiphany was founded by the monks of the Kostroma Epiphany Monastery in 1655-1661. The official date of foundation of the village is 1670, when, according to the decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich , the Mainsky prison was built on the banks of the Volga.
The first wooden church in the village was built in 1777; had two thrones: in honor of the Epiphany and St. Nicholas of Myra . It did not last long, was destroyed by fire.
In 1780, the village became the volost center of the eponymous volost of Simbirsk governorship .
Since 1796, the volost center of the Stavropol district of the Simbirsk province.
In 1823, at the initiative of Count Dmitry Nikolaevich Bludov , the stone Epiphany Church was erected, which has survived to this day. The revered icons of the Mother of God are stored in the temple: “God-loving”, “Seropahovaya”; “Joy” (“Consolation”) and “Kazan”.
Since 1928, the district center of the Staromainsky District of the Ulyanovsk District of the Middle Volga Region (Since 1929 - the Middle Volga Region , since 1935 - the Kuibyshev Region , since 1936 - the Kuibyshev Region ).
Since January 19, 1943, the district center of the Staromainsky district of the Ulyanovsk region .
By the decision of the regional executive committee of April 7, 1967, the village of Staraya Mayna was categorized as working village.
On September 15, 2016, the first Forest Museum in the region was opened in the village.
