Story
The picture takes place 2 years after the events of the first part in the same Rydel High School. In the yard 1961. Beginning of the school year ( Back To School Again ). Lady in Pink is now led by the beautiful Stephanie, who realizes that she has outgrown her relationship with the leader of the local T-Beards, Johnny Nogerelli. Meanwhile, a new student appears at the school - a quiet and shy Michael Carrington, who immediately falls in love with Stephanie.
In the evening, the guys gather in a bowling club ( Score Tonight ), where the relationship between Stephanie and Johnny is clarified. The girl decides to kiss the first one who entered the door - it turns out to be Michael. Michael wants to invite Stephanie on a date, but she, since she does not like him, is hot and lets the guy know that the man of her dreams is a cool biker on a motorcycle, and not some diligent nerd in the role of Michael ( Cool Rider ). Then Michael decides to buy a motorcycle and agrees to the offer of one of the members of the T-Beards gang, Louis, to make school reports for him, for which Louis pays him. With the proceeds, Michael buys a used motorcycle and begins to train in riding.
After an unusual biology lesson taught by Mr. Stuart, the Kings on Wheels biker gang faces the T-Beards. They come to the rescue of a mysterious motorcyclist (which is Michael), who sets the heat for the “Kings”, and then dissolves into the night ( Who's That Guy? ). Stephanie is fascinated by the stranger. Meanwhile, Louis decides to seduce his girlfriend Sharon, but nothing works out for him ( Let's Do It for Our Country ).
Stephanie and the Motorcyclist meet and they spend a romantic evening together. Michael is about to reveal the truth about himself, but he is forced to disappear again when the whole gang suddenly appears. Johnny is jealous and wants to teach Motorcyclist a lesson. Then the Lady in Pink decides to stand up for Stephanie and show her character to the T-Birds ( Prowlin ' ).
Meanwhile, Stephanie is gradually getting closer to Michael, and realizes that she likes him. At the same time, thoughts about the Motorcyclist are haunting her: on the one hand, this is the same biker she dreamed about, on the other, she has never seen his face and she is worried that behind the appearance of a biker there may be a completely distant from him person. Johnny threatens to beat Michael if she does not leave the Lady in Pink and does not stop communicating with the young man. The girl is in confused feelings and does not know what to do. The same thing happens with Michael ( Charades ).
Before the talent contest, Stephanie meets with the Motorcyclist, but Johnny and his gang immediately appear. The chase begins, as a result of which an accident occurs - everyone is sure that the motorcyclist is dead. During a performance at the competition ( A Girl For All Seasons ), Stephanie gets a fantasy in which she meets Motorcyclist ( (Love Will) Turn Back The Hands Of Time ). In the meantime, Ladies become winners of the contest, and Johnny and Stephanie are named king and queen of the evening.
The graduation year ends with a grandiose Hawaiian-style party ( Rock-A-Hula Luau ), on which Kings on wheels appear and begin to smash everything that comes in their way. The motorcyclist, who did not die during the accident, becomes his friend’s defense, and he reveals his true face - impressed by this turn of events, Jonny invites Michael to join his gang, and Stephanie is overjoyed to understand that he can finally be with his beloved by man. All the guys start celebrating graduation ( We'll Be Together ).
The final credits follow, as in the first film, designed as a school yearbook.

Sharon has very few remarks in the song “Do It for Our Country” (most of it is sung by Louis), because of which Maureen Tiffy never managed to record her vocals and therefore in the film in this scene she sings not her own voice, but the whole song in the end, Peter Frechett sang (at the same time, he sang remarks on behalf of Sharon on behalf of Louis, changing the pronouns). It was in Frechett’s version that the song got into the official album of the film, the duet option that sounded in the film itself was never released.
The only vocal replica of Pamela Sigall “you bowl me over” (in “Score Tonight”) was sung behind the scenes Leaf Green - Sigall, as a minor, had restrictions on the shooting hours, so she could not participate in the recording.
Production
After the success of the first part, it was planned to shoot three sequels, thus making a tetralogy , and an entire television series. After “Briolin 2” did not perform very well in reviews and rentals, these plans were canceled. For Patricia Birch, the film was not only a directorial debut, but in general her only directorial work in the cinema. At the very early stage of development, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta met with the studio management to discuss the return of their characters in the sequel, but it did not go beyond the first meeting. Their appearance was to take place as a cameo in the final of the film - Michael and Stephanie left the prom on a motorcycle, but they ran out of gas, and they stopped at a gas station owned by Danny and Sandy.
The rest of the film was planned to make a lot of references to the first part. So Michael’s school locker should have had the initials of Danny and Sandy, and the locker at the opening played the melody “You're The One That I Want” from the first movie.
Michael's motorcycle is the Honda 305 Scrambler. The cinema motorcycle itself had to be built from scratch, because after 20 years of motorcycles such a model was no longer found. Many of its parts had to be directly ordered from Honda Motor Co.
Casting
For almost all the leading performers, this film was a debut on the big screen, many of them had previously been shot only on television. The image of Michael Carrington was developed based on the image of the movie star of the 50s James Dean . Maxwell Caulfield, who had previously played successfully on Broadway, where he had been predicted to have a brilliant career, won this role, beating actors such as Sean Cassidy, Timothy Hatton (who at that time was already the youngest winner in the Oscar nomination) and Greg Evigan , and singers like Rick Springfield and Andy Gibb (the latter did not pass the screen test). The role of Stephanie Zinon was offered to Debbie Harry , but, since she was already over thirty, she refused, believing that she could not play a high school student. Michelle Pfeiffer during the casting bypassed the singers Pat Benatar and Kim Carnes, and the role of Stephanie became her first major role in the movie.
Tom Cruise auditioned for the role of Johnny Nogerelli, but Patricia Birch rejected his candidacy, considering it too low and young for this role. Christopher MacDonald , later approved for the role of Goose Mackenzie, also auditioned for this role. Approved in the end, Adrian Zmed at the time of filming was already familiar with the original Broadway production, where he played Danny Zuko.
The style of Bred, about whom the Sorority sisters sing, was played by the future husband of Olivia Newton-John Matt Latanza, whom he met during the filming of the film " Xanadu ."
Lorna Laft was the last approved of the leading actors.
Filming
The film was shot in 58 days. Filming began in November 1981. At the time of filming, the script was not yet completely finished and Patricia Birch wrote it right during the filming, remodeling or adding scenes on the go. This led to the fact that in the middle of the process she announced Didi Cohn that she was free, because of which her character Frenchy disappeared directly from the middle of the plot without any explanation, and during the editing her role was completely cut off (scenes were cut, where she teaches Michael to ride a motorcycle and takes out his motorcycle suit). In a 2003 interview, Conn described the filming process of the film as “urgent, crazy, and disorganized.”
As Rydel High School, the Excelsior High School in Norwalk was filmed, which was closed the same year.
The relationship of Michelle Pfeiffer and Maxwell Caulfield only on the screen acquired a love interaction, in reality, they did not get along with each other at all. Pfeiffer often called Caulfield "self-worshiping" in an interview in those years. In the scene where Stephanie is sitting on a motorcycle behind Michael, and then right on the move gets ahead of him (after Michael took her from the gas station), Pfeiffer herself performed this trick, while Michael was represented by stuntman Gary Davis.
Criticism
The film raised just $ 15 million at the box office. [5] The ranking on the Rotten Tomatoes website was 10%, based on reviews from 17 critics. [6]
Janet Maslin from The New York Times called the film "stupid and empty," noting that "the plot here is simplified even more than in the first picture. However, even musical numbers cannot cover these holes - they are so tasteless that songs about old times are sung during a bowling game. ” [7] On the contrary, Variety magazine noted the “originality of such a solution” (using a bowling club and bomb shelter as decorations for musical numbers), and also appreciated the “bright installation”. [eight]
Michelle Pfeiffer 's game has been praised by critics. The New York Times called her play “the only achievement” the film compared to the original: “She is great in any role,” noting also that she “suits her better than Olivia Newton-John .” [7] Variety also noted that the actress incredibly approached the image of her predecessor. In 1983, the actress was nominated for the Young Artist Award in the category "Best Actress". However, Pfeiffer, after years, extremely coolly responded to the filming, saying that her participation in them was forced, the filming process itself called awkward, and the result - shameful. In 1985, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times , the actress said that a high-profile advertising company and a failed movie rental eventually taught her not to build any hopes and expectations in advance.
Meanwhile, the picture, on the contrary, has hurt Maxwell Caulfield's career. In one of the interviews, the actor said: “Before the release of Biolina 2, I was called the new Richard Gere and John Travolta . After - everyone forgot about me. It’s like they poured a glass of ice water on me. It took 10 years to restore my career. " [2]
