Biography
Alar Kotli was born ( August 4 [ August 17 ] 1904 , in the village of Väike-Maarja near Rakvere , Estland Province , Russian Empire in the family of the church ranger Johan Kotli.
In 1915 - 1922 attended a gymnasium in Rakvere , in 1922-1923. studied sculpture at the Pallas School of Art in Tartu and mathematics at the University of Tartu . From 1923 to 1927 he studied architecture at the Higher Technical School of Danzig (Technische Hochschule Danzig), where he was an assistant until 1928.
From 1930 to 1937, Alar Kotli worked in various Estonian ministries before becoming deputy. Director of the state-owned construction company Ehitaja (Est. Builder).
From 1941 to 1945 he was the head of the department in the construction department. After World War II, from 1944 to 1958 he worked in the Estonian project , from 1955 with the rank of chief architect.
In 1945, he was one of the founders of the Union of Architects of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, of which he was chairman until 1950. From 1955 to 1963, he was vice-chairman of the Union. From 1961 to 1963, Kotli headed the Department of Architecture at the State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR. In 1947, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR.
In 1965, he was posthumously awarded the State Prize of the Estonian SSR. He was one of the most famous architects of his time. Alar Kotli is now resting on Metsakalmistu (Forest Cemetery) in Tallinn.
