Methana ( Greek: Μέθανα ) is a coastal village in Greece . Located at an altitude of 16 meters above sea level [1] , on the peninsula of the same name in the southeastern part of the Argolida region on the Peloponnese peninsula, 11 kilometers northwest of Galatas , 57 kilometers southeast of Corinth and 54 kilometers to southwest of Athens . The city's population is 892 residents according to the 2011 census [2] . It is part of the Trisinia-Methana community in the peripheral unit of the Island in the periphery of Attica .

Part of the region of Trizinia protruding into the Saronicikos Gulf formed the peninsula of Methane, opposite Aegina . Methane is a port area. Daily connections to Piraeus and Poros are via ferries. Travel time to Piraeus is 2 hours. In connection with the ongoing stage of activity of the methane volcano , the city has a number of hydrogen sulfide geothermal springs that form the basis of the local resort.

History
The ancient city of Mefana ( dr. Greek Μέθανα , lat. Methana ) [3] was located north of Tresen , on a peninsula with an acropolis on a steep mountain, at the foot of which the city itself was located. During the Peloponnesian war in 425 BC. e. the Athenians fortified themselves on the isthmus of the peninsula and from there raided the lands of Trezen, Epidavros and Galium [3] . According to Nikiev the world, the Athenians returned to Mephan the Lacedaemonians [4] .
Lutropoli-Methanon Community
The community of Methana ( Δήμος Μεθάνων ) was created in 1834 ( ΦΕΚ 19Α ). In 1912 ( ΦΕΚ 262Α ) the community was abolished and a community was created. In 1934 ( ΦΕΚ 33Α ) the community was re-created. In 1966 ( ΦΕΚ 119Α ), the community was renamed Lutropoli Methanon ( Δήμος Λουτροπόλεως Μεθάνων ) [5] . The community includes the village of Driceika . The population of 1097 inhabitants according to the 2011 census [2] . The area is 12,034 square kilometers [1] .
