24th cycle of solar activity

Average annual sunspot numbers [1] [2]
The outbreak of August 9, 2011. The picture was taken at a wavelength of 131 Å , that is, only the solar corona is visible.

The 24th cycle of solar activity is one of the 11-year cycles that began in January 2009 (according to IZMIRAN [3] , according to other sources - in December 2008 [4] or even January 4, 2008 [5] , according to - apparently, it all depends on what is meant by the beginning of the cycle) and is current. The smoothed average monthly Wolf number reached 116.4 by April 2014 and then began to decline [6] .

As of October 13, 2018, according to GOES satellite data, the most significant in terms of peak X-ray intensity of flares were as follows:

date ofScore
September 6, 2017 [7]X9.3
September 10, 2017 [8]X8.2
August 9, 2011 [9]X6.9
March 7, 2012 [10]X5.4
February 25, 2014 [11]X4.9
November 5, 2013 [12]X3.3
May 14, 2013 [13]X3.2
October 24, 2014 [14]X3.1
May 13, 2013 [15]X2.8
May 5, 2015 [16]X2.7

As of October 13, 2018, the most significant geomagnetic disturbances of this cycle occurred on October 25, 2011 (-147 nT), March 9, 2012 (-145 nT), July 15, 2012 (-139 nT), March 17, 2013 (-132 nTl), March 17, 2015 (-222 nT), June 23, 2015 (-204 nT), December 20, 2015 (-155 nT), May 28, 2017 (-125 nT) and August 26, 2018 (-174 nT). Here in parentheses is the Dst index ( Eng. Disturbance Storm Time Index ) at the peak. Other events by the Dst index at a maximum did not reach −125 nT [17] .
