Temporary Memorials
After the events of 9/11, an impromptu memorial was erected on a hill overlooking the Pentagon. People came to him to pay tribute to the dead [4] . A month after the attack, 25 thousand people took part in the memorial service in the Pentagon for employees and their families; US President George W. Bush and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld made speeches [5] . Bush noted that “the wounds of this building will not be forgotten, but it will be repaired. Brick by brick, we will quickly restore the Pentagon [6] . ”The American flag was lowered for the duration of the ceremony [7] .
Heroes of America Memorial
Opened in September 2002, after the renovation of the building was completed, the new Heroes of America Memorial and chapel is located at the point where 77 American Airlines crashed .
The memorial consists of five acrylic panels: one depicts the Purple Heart medal with the names of the awarded military personnel who died during the attack, on the second panel awarded civilians, the names of the deceased are engraved on two panels, and the reporting tribute is engraved on the central panel. In a small chapel located in the next room, there are stained glass windows on a patriotic theme. It also includes books with photographs and a brief biography of the victims.
Design and Construction
The Pentagon Memorial was designed by Beckman and Kesman from Philadelphia , PA , with the participation of Buro Happold . In honor of 184 victims, in an area of 7800 m², 184 lighted benches with the names of the victims were installed. They are arranged according to the ages of the victims, starting with Dana Falkenberg (who was 3 years old) and ending with John Yanmiki (71 years old). Benches with the names of the victims inside the building are located as those who were killed at the time of the collision of the plane with the Pentagon; benches with the names of passengers are located according to their seats [8] . If a family died in the attack, then their names, in addition to individual benches, were added to the reflecting pool [9] .
The construction of the memorial began on June 15, 2006 [10] . By November 2006, a foundation pit was dug for the pool [11] , and by May 2007 a wall was built along the main perimeter and concrete piles of benches were poured [12] .
Opening
The memorial was opened on September 11, 2008 at 19 hours, accompanied by the Naval Choir and Orchestra of the US Navy [13] . President George W. Bush called the memorial "a tribute to the eternal memory of 184 souls." More than 20,000 people attended the unveiling ceremony, including former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld , chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen and current (at that time) US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates [14] .
