The mountain has three peaks, the height above sea level is 233 m , 211 m and 201 m, each of which has different names in English and French .
Geologically, Mont Royal is a small hill located between the Appalachian Mountains and the Lavrentian Upland . The peaks do not present any difficulties to conquer. The first ascent by Europeans was recorded by Jacques Cartier with his team in 1535 . Today, the peaks and slopes of the mountain are often visited by locals and tourists .
In 1876, the Mont Royal Park was formed on the slopes of the mountain. Outside the park there are two cemeteries : the largest necropolis of the country, Notre Dame de Nage and Mont Royal , included in the register of National Historic Sites of Canada ( Eng. National Historic Sites of Canada ) [2] .
The most famous attraction of the mountain is the Cross of Mont Royal with a height of 31.4 m, mounted on top. [3] The modern construction was completed in 1924 , but the first cross was erected as early as 1643 by Paul Shomedi . Another attraction is St. Joseph’s Oratorio , which is a small basilica and one of Canada ’s largest Catholic churches . [four]
In 1976, cycling competitions were held at the Summer Olympics in the park. [5]
