Biography
The son of a prominent politician, diplomat and journalist, editor-in-chief of the capital's newspaper Nasyon. In 1919 he settled in Paris , studied painting at the Grand Chaumière Academy in Montparnasse , became close to the surrealists , took a pseudonym (from the French expression j'en ai marre , "I'm fed up"). In Santiago he was friends with the poet Vicente Widobro , translated his poems from French, was a member of the Montparnasse literary group, and wrote the Notes on Art column (1923–1925) in the Nacion newspaper, which propagated European cubism and futurism .
Creativity
He did not publish his works until 1935 , when three books of science fiction prose “Miltin, 1934”, “One Year” and “Yesterday” were published at once, in 1937 an avant-garde manifesto was added to them and, at the same time, an absurd parody of Flaubert’s short story short stories "Ten." After that, Juan Emar did not print anything, although he continued to write. In 1950, the University of Santiago organized an exhibition of paintings by Emard.
The literary eccentric of Juan Emar was completely ignored by contemporary criticism, recognition came to the writer only in the 1970-1980s, when he was called the largest figure in Latin American literature, "Chilean Kafka ", the predecessor of Juan Rulfo and Julio Cortazar . Then the publication of his gigantic, over 4 thousand pages, experimental self-parody novel "The Threshold" began (the first part - 1977 , all five parts in full - 1996 ). Emar himself never sought fame: "My hide and seek," he wrote, "consisted in not publishing anything at all, and let me someday be unknown to me by people sitting on the steps of my grave."
