Regular Season
Overview
The main news of the 1922-1923 season was the sale by Montreal of one of its best strikers, Newsy Lalond (who did not find a common language with the owner Leo Dandurand), to Saskatoon (Western Hockey League) without first placing it on the NHL fan. The President of the NHL, Frank Calder, managed to settle the conflict by turning the sale of Lalond into an exchange - Montreal received from Saskatoon Orel Zholiaa.
Joliate immediately became the leader of the Canadiens and helped the team take second place in the regular season. The first, like a year ago, were the Ottawa Senators , who had one of the best goalkeeper Clint Benedict , who missed an average of 2.3 goals per match - the best indicator in the NHL .
Despite the dirty play of the Canadiens, the Senators won the first match of the league final 2-0. After this match, the owners of “Montreal” were disqualified for the rough play of two of their hockey players - Sprague Cleghorn and Bill Coutier. Nevertheless, in the second game, the Canadiens led 2-0 and only a goal by Sai Denny helped Ottawa win by the total difference of 3-2 goals and goals conceded.
In the Stanley Cup final, the Senators crossed their clubs with both the champions of the Pacific Coast Hockey League and the best team of the Western Hockey League.

Overview
In 1923 , Stanley Cup organizers refused to hold playoff matches between the teams of the West Coast Hockey Association and the Western Canadian Hockey League, as a result of which the champions of both leagues received the right to directly compete for the Stanley Cup .
First, Vancouver Millioners , winners of the West Coast tournament, crossed their clubs with the Ottawa Senators , NHL champions. The matches were held in Vancouver, which did not prevent Ottawa from winning the Cup in four games. The best among the “senators” was Harry “Punch” Broadbent, who scored five goals in the series.
After the series ended, Frank Patrick, the Millionaires coach, called Ottawa “the strongest team I have ever seen.”
The champions of the Western Canadian Hockey League, Edmonton Eskimo , did not agree with Patrick's opinion. The club from Edmonton gave a real fight to the Senators, losing in two games with a minimum score. Ottawa's winning goals were scored by Sai Denneny in the first fight and Harry Broadbent in the second.
