Biography
Early years
Nathaniel Barnaby was born in Chatham on February 25, 1829. At the age of 14, he entered the Navy as an apprentice. After completing his studies at the Portsmouth Naval School, in 1852, at the age of 23, he became a draftsman at a government shipyard in Woolwich . Two years later, in 1854, he was appointed to the Department of Naval Shipbuilding. He participated in the design of HMS Warrior .
In 1863, Edward Reed , married to Barnaby's sister, became the chief builder of the fleet. Barnaby himself led the headquarters of Reed and as such participated in the design of most of the new ships.
Mature years
After the resignation of Reed Barnaby in 1872, at the age of 43, he was appointed “president of the shipbuilding council” and chief naval engineer of the fleet.
Sir Nathaniel Barnaby led British naval shipbuilding for 13 years, and his tenure was marked by exceptional difficulties in creating projects, both technically and financially [2] .
The range of its design achievements ranged from the last mast-carrier battleships with a central battery to tower ships carrying the largest guns ever mounted on British battleships - an unusually motley collection of types created over an unprecedentedly short 13-year period [2] .
Projects
- Ram destroyer Polyphemus
- Armadillos of the Colossus type
- Armored cruisers of the Calypso type
- HMS Inflexible (1876)
