Biography

After studying at a theological seminary, he taught at the University of Montreal ( French Université de Montréal ). For a long time he was the editor of the nationalist journal "National Action" ( French Action nationale ), which exists to this day. In the late 1930s, he was one of the first to propose the idea of Quebec independence, calling the future country “the French state” ( French État français ).

A teacher and a good speaker, Gru worked a lot with students, giving lectures on historical and national subjects.

Some aspects of the abbot's activity are perceived ambiguously. His works and lectures of the twenties and thirties contained elements of chauvinism, and sometimes racism. After the Second World War, he significantly changed his views and became the conductor of more civil nationalism.

Memory

In honor of Abbot Gru, a number of streets are named in various cities of Quebec, as well as one of the metro stations in Montreal .
