Biography

He came from an old Baltic noble family and was brought up in the Revel noble school. In 1833, a twelve- year- old boy was enrolled in the Naval Cadet Corps , where in 1838 he was promoted to the rank of midshipman . In 1839 he graduated from the Marine Corps with production in the rank of warrant officer .

Service

In 1838-1842, Maidel sailed and performed measurements in the Baltic Sea , and from 1843-1846 he served in the White Sea Flotilla. April 15, 1845 he was promoted to lieutenant , and in 1846 on the ship "Narva" moved from Arkhangelsk to Kronstadt . Then for three years, Lieutenant Maidel sailed in the Caspian Sea , where he commanded the schooner Tarantula , cruised at the Astrabad station. In 1852-1857 he again served in the Baltic Fleet and on March 27, 1855 was promoted to the rank of captain-lieutenant . In 1855 he distinguished himself in the defense of Sveaborg , for his courage he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree with swords and a bow .

Commanding the Rider clipper , Baron Meidel left Arkhangelsk on April 14, 1856, in Kronstadt . Due to winter storms, he spent several months in the port of Hammerfest and on May 24, 1857, arrived in Kronstadt .

In June 1857, Grigory Gustavovich was appointed commander of the Dzhigit clipper and, as part of the 1st Amur detachment, moved from Kronstadt to Nikolaevsk, where he was placed at the disposal of the commander of the Siberian Flotilla. In 1858-1859, the Dzhigit was part of the Russian consulate in Hakodat . In 1859, as part of a squadron under the flag of N. N. Muravyov-Amursky, he participated in sailing to China and Japan .

On September 5, 1859, Baron Maidel took command of the Boyarin corvette and on June 26, 1860 arrived in Shanghai , where the corvette became part of the Pacific Squadron under the brady pennant of Captain 1st Rank I.F. Likhachev , and on July 3 moved to the Gulf of Pechili . On November 22, 1860, the corvette arrived in Shanghai, on January 15 of the following year, a detachment of three ships (Boyar, Voevoda , Dzhigit ), under the command of Maidel, went to sea and on August 18 arrived in Kronstadt [3] .

After returning from a trip around the world, Grigory Gustavovich was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav of the 2nd degree with the imperial crown and on January 1, 1862 he was promoted to captain of the 2nd rank and until 1863 he commanded the Astrabad Sea Station and a detachment of ships attached to it.

On January 1, 1864, Baron Maidel was promoted to captain of the 1st rank and in 1864-1869 he commanded in the Baltic Sea the sail-screw frigates Dmitry Donskoy (from March 30, 1864) and Oleg (since 1866). In 1865 he was awarded the Order of St. Anne of the 2nd degree .

In 1870, Grigory Gustavovich commanded a detachment of Black Sea corvettes, and on July 26, 1871 he was again transferred to the Baltic Fleet and appointed commander of the 6th naval crew.

On January 1, 1872, Baron Maidel was promoted to Rear Admiral with the appointment of the Baltic Fleet as the junior flagship, and in 1872-1874 he commanded a detachment of ships of the Naval Academy in the Gulf of Finland. In 1874 he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav of the 1st degree.

On January 1, 1875, Grigory Gustavovich was appointed the junior flagship of the Black Sea Fleet , but the next year he died in Nikolaev .

Memory

  • The name of Maidel is the western entrance cape of Strelok Bay (eastern entrance cape of Sysoev Bay).
