Biography

Born in 1849 in the Irkutsk province. Subsequently, he became a first guild merchant in Tomsk . Gorokhov's business career is mainly associated with the village of Berdsky .

In 1870, Gorokhov bought a small mill business from the widow of the Berd merchant Vasilyev and eventually turned it into one of the leading milling enterprises in the Tomsk province .

Gorokhov also actively participated in the development of Berd village ( see Contribution to the development of the village ). He and his wife, Anna Ivanovna, remained in the history of the city of Berdsk as philanthropists who did a lot for its development.

Gorokhov died on a business trip in Moscow, was buried at the Vagankovo cemetery , however, in accordance with the will, a month later his remains were transported to Berdsk and reburied there. With the construction of the Novosibirsk hydropower station, the cemetery was flooded and in 2007 the remains of Gorokhov were reburied for the third time.

Gorokhov's Mill

Gorokhov mill grind about 90 tons of wheat per day. At the mill there was its own free hospital for workers, and in 1903 a craft school was opened. In addition to literacy, the school trained workers serving the Gorokhov mill and tugboats.

Contribution to rural development

In 1887, a parochial school was built with the support of Gorokhov, and in 1899 a children's colony was opened for physically weakened children by the Tomsk Society for Physical Development.

When, in 1891, by the decision of the Diocesan Council, the reconstruction of the Sretensky Church, which was built in 1808, was started, Gorokhov provided assistance in the implementation of this project. In 1897, in the village of Berdsk, on the initiative of Gorokhov’s wife, Anna Ivanovna, a free public library was founded, also built with the funds of Gorokhov himself. When the library acted "People's House" with amateur theater.

In 1904, Gorokhov expressed a desire to build in the village a building for a rural hospital with an apartment for a doctor and all the necessary buildings. In 1906, he submitted a memorandum to the governor with technical documentation and estimates, which were compiled by civil engineer A. D. Kryachkov . Gorokhov offered to build a hospital at his own expense, with the condition that the cost of this construction will be reimbursed to him no later than 1909 . In October 1906 the Provincial Office approved the draft, the proposal was accepted, but not implemented. Soon V.A. Gorokhov died; the heirs of the merchant were not interested in the construction of the hospital [1] .

Development after Gorokhov's death

During the life of Vladimir Gorokhov, his son Sergey, a supporter of modernization and mechanization of production, proposed to introduce modern machines in the mill and connect it with warehouses by cableway. Vladimir Alexandrovich, however, objected to the mechanization that threatened to leave most of the mill staff without work.

In 1908 , after the death of Vladimir Gorokhov, a cable car was stretched between the mill and the warehouses. For its construction, Sergei, himself an engineer by training, ordered a Swiss engineer Eugene Lippert from Zurich .
