Biography

In 1941 he graduated from the Higher Naval School named after M.V. Frunze .

During the Great Patriotic War, as part of the 66th separate naval rifle brigade, he participated in the defense of Leningrad and the Battle of Stalingrad .

In the battles he was twice wounded and received a severe concussion , accompanied by loss of speech. After discharge from the hospital, A. I. Alekseev was sent to advanced training courses for the commanding staff , where he studied at the cartographic department.

He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War II degree [2] [3] .

In 1943, he was appointed senior editor of the Northwest Cartographic Publishing Production of the Navy's Hydrographic Directorate .

In the fall of 1944, A. I. Alekseev, at his request, was transferred to the Baltic Fleet , where he served on hydrographic vessels for three years.

At the end of 1947 he entered the hydrographic faculty of the Naval Academy of Shipbuilding and Arms named after A.N. Krylov . After graduating from the Academy, in 1950, he was sent to the Far East .

Since 1950 in Sovetskaya Gavan as a senior officer in the hydrographic department of the North Pacific Flotilla .

While still at the academy, A.I. Alekseev became interested in studying the history of the development of the Far East, and his service in the Pacific Fleet allowed him to carefully study the geography, hydrography, and cartography of the North Pacific.

In 1956, due to injuries received during the war, Alexander Ivanovich was forced to leave military service. Soon he was invited to the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences of the USSR .

In 1970, A. I. Alekseev defended his thesis on the topic “Amur expedition of 1849-1855” and became a doctor of historical sciences .

In 1985 , in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Victory, he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree [4]

On the issues of geographical and hydrographic studies of the Far East and Russian America, he published more than 40 monographs, books, and about 200 articles. A world-famous scientist, he maintained constant contacts with many colleagues from France, the USA, Canada and Brazil. Before retiring in 1990, he was deputy. Editor-in-chief of a series of collections of documents in six volumes, “Studies of Russians in the Pacific Ocean in the 18th – First Half of the 19th Century.” (Volumes 1 and 2). He combined intensive scientific activity with a lot of public work: he was a member of the Academic Council of the Moscow branch of the USSR Civil Society, a member of many scientific councils and associations of the USSR Academy of Sciences (in historical geography, in the history of Russian foreign policy, the Association of Historians and Researchers of Russian America, etc.).

Alexander Ivanovich Alekseev died on May 27, 1993 in Moscow, was buried in Khimki.

Alexander Ivanovich Alekseev is an honorary citizen of the city ​​of Sovetskaya Gavan .
