Running for 1 mile (1609.344 m) is the official sports discipline, the only non-metric distance at which the IAAF still records world records . As well as running on 1000 meters and 2000 meters , is not an Olympic kind.
Briton Roger Bannister became the first man to run a mile faster than four minutes. In women, the first mile of five minutes was reached by Diana Lezer (UK) 23 days after the Bannister record. The first schoolboy to run a four-minute mile was Jim Ryan from Compton , California , who ran in 1964 for 3.59.0.
