Marriage and children

From childhood, Amalia was intended to be a bride to Prince Leopold of Bavaria , but he married the Austrian Archduke Gisel . Amalia’s husband was Maximilian Emanuel , Duke of Bavaria, the youngest child in the family of Duke Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria and his wife, Louis of Bavaria . Maximilian Emanuel was the younger brother of the Austrian Empress Elizabeth .

They married on September 20, 1875 in Ebental , Lower Austria. The marriage was very happy.

Amalia and Maximilian Emanuel had three sons:

  • Siegfried Augustus Maximilian Maria, Duke of Bavaria (March 10, 1876 - July 12, 1952)
  • Christoph Joseph Clemens Maria , Duke of Bavaria (April 22, 1879 - July 10, 1963)
  • Luitpold Emanuel Ludwig Maria , Duke of Bavaria (June 30, 1890 - January 16, 1973)

Amalia was seriously worried about her husband’s untimely and sudden death and died of peritonitis less than a year after the death of Max Emanuel.
