Newfoundland (New France)

Map of Newfoundland, compiled by James Cook

Newfoundland ( fr. Terre-Neuve ) was disputed in the 17th century by each other by England and France.

In the 15th century, the Great Newfoundland Bank with its fish resources became the object of attention of European fishermen, including Bretons, Normans and Basques. In the XVI century, the local bay began to be used as a port for seasonal operations. Gradually, the settlement of Plesans grew up there, around which a French colony was formed.

In the second half of the seventeenth century, Louis XIV decided to strengthen the defense of Pélesance, and three forts were built:

  • Fort Pleasant in 1662
  • Fort Royal in 1687
  • Fort St. Louis in 1690

In peacetime, the garrison and guns were in the city. The Governor of Pleasans ruled all French possessions in Newfoundland, which in 1663 extended to Cape Cape Race in the south-east of the island and Cape Cape Ray in the south-west.

In 1663, there were 200 soldiers, settlers and fishermen in Pleasant. In 1687, 36 families lived in French Newfoundland, 488 people, including 256 in Pleasant.

In 1690, during the war, King William Plesans was plundered by English freebooters. August 24, 1691 there was a new attack on the Pleasans, but it was repulsed, in response, the French governor looted the English settlement of Newfoundland. In 1692 and 1693, new English attacks followed, which were again repulsed. In 1696, the French governor attacked the English settlement of St. John’s and took the city on 30 November. The end of the war, the Rijswijk Peace Treaty of 1697, recognized Newfoundland as a joint possession of England and France.

According to the Utrecht Peace Treaty of 1713, which ended the War for the Spanish Succession , Newfoundland became the possession of England, and the French settlers were to leave it. The French left Pleasans and moved to Louisbourg in the colony Il-Royal .
