Coaching career
Before the start of his coaching career, Lazaroni played as a goalkeeper in several amateur clubs in Brazil. In 1985, he led Flamengo at the beginning as acting after the resignation of Mario Zagallo , and then as head coach. In 1986, he led the team to victory in the Carioca League . The following year, he led Vasco da Gama , with whom he twice won the championship in this tournament. From March to May 1988, he led the Saudi club Al-Ahly [1] , after which he returned to Brazil, becoming a Gremio mentor. In 1989, on the eve of the America's Cup, he was appointed head coach of the national team of Brazil . In the national team, Sebastian Lazaroni tried to enter the position of libero [2] . In July 1989, under his leadership, the Brazilian national team won the America’s Cup , not losing a match during the tournament and conceiving just one goal. In the qualifying matches for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, the Brazilians defeated the Venezuelan team twice [3] , and in the match with the Chileans they were awarded a technical victory due to the opponent’s refusal to continue the match [4] . At the World Cup itself, the Brazilian team beat all rivals in the group stage, and in the 1/8 finals lost to Argentina with a minimum score [5] . After this failure, the Brazilian Football Confederation decided to resign the head coach. Lazaroni remained in Italy, signing a contract with Fiorentina , but could not achieve any success, and during the 1991/92 season he was dismissed from his post.
In January 1993, he again went to Saudi Arabia to the Al-Hilal club, but only worked there for six months [1] . In the summer of that year, he took over the leadership of the club from the Italian series B “ Bari ”, with which he was able to reach the 1/8 finals of the Italian Cup , where he lost to “ Torino ”. After that, Lazaroni returned to America, where at first he headed the Mexican Leon and again the Brazilian Vasco da Gama . In 1996, after a two-year hiatus, he was invited to the Turkish Fenerbahçe . Together with the team in 1997, he took third place in the Turkish championship . And on October 30, 1996, Sebastian became a co-author of the historical result. On this day, the English Manchester United took to Fenerbahce at Old Trafford and lost 0-1. This defeat was his first home failure in European competitions in more than forty years [6] .
Then Lazaroni worked in the Chinese “ Shanghai Shenhua ”, the Brazilian “ Botafogo ” and “ Juventude ”, Kuwaiti “ Al-Arabi ”, the Japanese “ Yokohama F. Marinos ” and the national team of Jamaica . In 2006, he returned to Turkey, heading Trabzonspor , but did not achieve significant results with him. In September, in the first round of the UEFA Cup, the Turks lost to the Spanish Osasuna . In an unsuccessful start in the national championship and the UEFA Cup, the club management considered the head coach guilty, in connection with which he was dismissed [7] . In July 2007, Sebastian moved to Portugal, leading the Maritima . Under his leadership, the club performed quite successfully, taking fifth place in the championship and making it to the UEFA Cup , but Lazaroni left the team, accepting a favorable offer from the leadership of Qatar SK . Together with the team, he won the Crown Prince Cup . On August 7, 2011, the Qatar Football Association was appointed head coach of the national team , instead of the dismissed Milovan Raevac [8] .
