Shahmukhi ( شاہ مکھی , gourmet. ਸ਼ਾਹਮੁਖੀ , English Shahmukhi , literally “from the royal lips”) is a local version of the Arabic letter , which was originally used to write Urdu texts. Shahmukhi was introduced under the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan . Shahmukhi is based on Nasta'liq handwriting. From the middle of the 20th century, shahmukhi has been used to record Punjabi in Pakistan and parts of India . Non-Muslim Punjabis, especially Sikhs , use the Gurmukha alphabet to write.
