The first attempt to create the Association was made in 1957, and Ted Lindsay, Detroit Red Wings player, became its president. Having sued the league, the Association was able to conclude a profitable out-of-court agreement on the distribution of television revenues, but in the same year it ceased to exist [2] .

In 1971, the NHL Hockey Association established an award that is awarded annually to the best player in the opinion of the hockey players themselves. The prize was originally called the Lester Pearson Award in honor of Lester Pearson , the former Prime Minister of Canada . Now it is called " Ted Lindsay World " in honor of Lindsay [3] .

After a lockout that shortened the 1994-95 season to 48 matches, the NHLPA signed a collective agreement on working conditions in 1995. It was originally supposed to last for six seasons with a possible revision in 1998, but was eventually extended until September 15, 2004.

The NHL and NHLPA could not agree on the new terms of the contract, as a result of which the 2004/2005 season was completely canceled. The NHL insisted on the introduction of a hard salary ceiling, to which the hockey union responded categorically. Two months after the start of the “lockout”, the union began to pay “unemployment benefits” to its members - $ 10,000 per month. Hockey players saved this money themselves in a special union fund over the past few years. The agreement was signed in 2005 until 2012 . In January 2013, after a 119-day lockout, the parties signed a new agreement for a period of 10 years with the possibility of early termination in 8.
