The city is located in the south of the province, in the forest edge. To the north is Lake Manitoba , with which Portage la Prairie is connected by a canal.

Before the arrival of Europeans, these places were inhabited by Indian tribes . The first settlement founded by white people here was Fort la Rein ("The Queen's Fort"). This happened in 1738 . Now there is a museum located on the territory of modern Portage la Prairie [3] . The city itself under its current name was founded in 1851 ; in 1880 he received town status, and in 1907 - city.

Population

According to a census held in 2006, the population of the city was 11,245 people, along with rural suburbs - 20,490. Of these, 10,010 are men and 10,480 are women [2] . The proportion of citizens who have reached the age of 15 years is 79.1% (77.7% for men and 80.4% for women). The average age of the population is 39.1 years (37.9 for men and 40.2 for women) [2] .

Economics

In the northeast of Portage la Prairie is the Macmillan Industrial Park . Enterprises such as McCain Foods Ltd. are based in the center . , Nutri Pea , the Food Development Center and Hi-Tec Industries Inc. [4] The total area occupied by industrial enterprises is 220 hectares, of which 80 are part of the Macmillan Park.

Since 2002, a new industrial area has been built and expanded. Its area is 2237 km², it occupies part of the city itself, part of the suburbs and stretches right up to Lake Manitoba [5] . Residential buildings, industrial enterprises of various profiles, and agricultural plots are located on its territory [4] .

Also in the city and on its outskirts are: the Western Industrial Zone, the Railway Industrial Zone, the Southern Aerospace Center and the Poplar Bluff Industrial Park ( English Poplar Bluff - “poplar cliff”) [4] .

The working- age population in the age group of 15 years and over is (according to 2006) 10 345 people. Of these, 9845 people were provided with work and 500 were unemployed [6] .

Transport

Portage-la-Prairie train station Served by the state-owned Via Rail Corporation . Used trains " Winnipeg — Churchill "And" Canadian ". The railway station on the Canadian Pacific Railway is now not used and turned into a museum [7] .
