Origin and etymology of the name
The ancestor of the family is considered the vassal of William the Conqueror - the Norman knight Anshetil (or Anketil) de Gray (d. After 1086), who participated in the Norman conquest of England . His name in the documents has no established spelling. There are variants of the names Anchetil and Anketil , and the generic name is indicated as de Graye or de Grei . The origin of Anshetil is not entirely clear. According to one version, he came from the family of seniors Croy ( fr. Croy ) from Picardy . According to another version, his ancestral nickname is associated with the Norman city of Gray ( old man. Grai , modern Gray-sur-Mer ). The name suggests that Anshetil was of mixed Norwegian-French origin. The exact pedigree of his ancestors is doubtful, but some researchers believe that Anshetil could be the son of Hugo Fitz-Turgis. It is possible that Anshetil de Gray is the same person as Anschitil de Ro ( French Anschitil de Ros ), who was the landowner, vassal to Bishop Bayeux . His possessions were located in the Cray Valley in Kent , from where the generic nickname Gray could have originated (the words Cray and Graye in Kent were interchangeable: from Anglo-Norman French “Cray” is translated as “chalk”, and in many French regional dialects “greye” "Also translated as" chalk ").
After the Normans conquered England, Anshetil took possession of the Redrefield estate, later called Rotherfield Grays , and Grace Cat in South Oxfordshire . He was also Lord of Stendlake in West Oxfordshire.

History
Probably Anshetil's grandson was Robert de Gray of Rotherfield Grace. His eldest son, Henry de Gray (d. 1219) was an approximate king of England, John Landless , bought the Terrock estate in Essex in 1195 (later called Grace-Terrock ). In 1201, he also received the Kodnor estate in Derbyshire , and in 1216, the Grimston estate in Nottinghamshire . The second of Robert’s sons, John de Gray (d. October 18, 1214), became the bishop of Norridge in 1200, and in 1205, under pressure from King John Bezemzelny , was elected archbishop of Canterbury . However, Pope Innocent III canceled this election. In 1213, John de Gray was recommended as Bishop of Durham , but did not live to be elected.
Four of the six sons of Henry de Gray became the ancestors of individual branches of the clan. Another son, Walter de Gray (d. May 1, 1255), was during the reign of John the Landless Lord Chancellor, and after the death of the king became archbishop of York .
Gray from Codnor
The ancestor of this branch was one of the sons of Henry de Gray - Richard de Gray of Codnor (d. September 8, 1271). He was governor of the Channel Islands , constable of Dover Castle , and also the Ranger of the Five Ports in 1258–1264. His grandson, Henry de Gray (d. 1308) in 1299 received the title of 1st Baron Gray of Codnor.
The last representative of the branch, bearing the title of Baron Gray of Codnor, was Henry de Gray (d. 1496), the 7th Baron Gray of Codnor. His possessions were confiscated. From his youngest son, Henry, a branch of the Grey from Langley came.
Rotherfield Gray
The ancestor of this branch was one of the sons of Henry de Gray - Robert de Gray from Rotherfield. His great-great-grandson, John de Gray (October 29, 1300 - September 1, 1359), in 1338 received the title of 1st Baron Gray from Rotherfield.
The branch died out in 1387 with the death of Robert de Gray , 4th Baron Gray of Rotherfield. Robert’s possessions and title were inherited by his daughter’s husband, John Deincourt (February 28, 1382 - May 11, 1406), 6th Baron Gray of Rotherfield.
Grey from Merton
The founder of this branch was one of the sons of Henry de Gray - William de Gray from Cavendish. From his eldest son, Sir Richard de Gray of Sendiakre (d. Until May 26, 1298), a branch of the Grey from Sendiakr that died in the 14th century came. Her last representative was Richard's great-grandson, William de Gray of Sandiakra (c. 1307 - c. 1369), leaving only Alice's daughter, who married Edward Hilary. From the youngest son of William de Gray of Cavendish, Sir Thomas de Gray (d. 1321), another branch of the clan came. His son, Sir Thomas de Gray (d. 1365), inherited the Merton estate through marriage, becoming the ancestor of the Greeks from Merton.
A descendant of Thomas, William de Gray of Merton (d. May 9, 1781) in 1780 received the title of 1st Baron Walsingham. The current title holder is John de Gray (born 1925), 9th Baron of Walsingham. His heir is the eldest son Robert (born 1969).
Grey from Wilton
The ancestor of this branch was one of the sons of Henry de Gray - John de Gray of Scherland (d. 1265), the sheriff of Buckingham, Bedford and Hereford. His son Reginald de Gray in 1295 received the title of 1st Baron Gray of Wilton. With the grandchildren of the ancestor, the clan was divided into 2 branches. The eldest son of John de Gray , 2nd Baron Gray of Wilton, Henry de Gray (October 28, 1281/1282 - December 1, 1342), after the death of his father inherited his title, and the youngest, Roger de Gray , became the founder of the Gray branch of Ratina.
The last bearer of the title was Sir Thomas Gray (d. July 6, 1617), the 15th Baron Gray of Wilton. In 1603, he took part in the Gunpowder plot , as a result of which his title and possessions were confiscated, and he was sentenced to death, but the execution of the sentence was delayed. Thomas died in custody at the Tower and left no children.
The last representative of the branch was Thomas's sister, Bridget Gray, who died in 1648. She was married to Sir Rowland Egerton of Fermingoe , 1st Baronet Egerton and Oulton . In 1784, for one of their descendants, Thomas , the 7th Baronet of Edgerton, the title of Baron Gray of Wilton was revived, and in 1801 he received the titles of Earl of Wilton and Viscount Gray of Wilton.
Grey from Ratin
The founder of this branch was Roger de Gray (d. March 6, 1352/1353), the youngest son of John de Gray , 2nd Baron Gray of Wilton. Roger in 1324 received the title of Baron Gray of Ratin.
From the three sons of Reginald de Gray , 3rd Baron Gray from Rathine, 3 lines went. The eldest of Reginald's sons, Sir John Gray, married Constance Holland, the daughter of John Holland , 1st Duke of Exeter , and Elizabeth of Lancaster. Through this marriage, he became related to the royal family. John's son, Edmund Gray , participated in the Scarlet and White Rose War . His betrayal at the Battle of Northampton in 1460 led to the victory of the Yorks : King Henry VI was captured by the Duke of Edward of York , who was then crowned king of England under the name of Edward IV. As a reward for his treason, Edmund Gray was richly rewarded, having received a number of estates, posts, as well as the title of Earl of Kent. The descendants of Edmund Gray held the title of Earl of Kent until 1740, but did not play a prominent role. The last representative of the branch was Henry Gray, 12th Earl of Kent , who received the title of Marquis in 1706, and in 1710 - the title of Duke of Kent. However, he did not leave heirs.
Another son of Reginald de Gray, 3rd Baron Gray of Rathin, Edward Gray , through marriage to Elizabeth Ferrers, inherited the Ferrers' possessions in Grouby . His son, John Gray of Groby, took part in the Scarlet and White Rose War and died in the second battle of St. Albans . King Edward IV married the widow of John, Elizabeth Woodville , thanks to which the eldest son of John and Elizabeth, Thomas Gray received the title of Marquis of Dorset. Thomas's grandson, Henry Gray , received the title of Duke of Suffolk through marriage. One of his daughters, Jane Gray , after the death of King Edward VI on July 10, 1553, was crowned Queen of England, but was soon removed by Mary Tudor , sister of Edward VI, and executed in 1554. In the same year, for the plot against Queen Mary, the Duke of Suffolk, father Jane, was executed, and his possessions and titles were confiscated. However, his brother, John Gray of Pirgo, despite his participation in the uprising against Maria Tudor, saved his life. His son, Henry Gray of Pirgo , in 1603 received the title of Baron Gray of Grouby. Henry's grandson, Henry Gray of Groby , received the title of Earl of Stamford in 1628. His descendants also bore the title of Earl of Warington in 1796-1883. In 1976, after the death of childless Roger Gray, 10th Earl of Stamford , the branch died out, and the titles of Earl of Stamford and Baron Gray from Grouby disappeared.
Another son of Reginald de Gray, 3rd Baron Gray of Ratin, Robert Gray of Enville and Whitington, became the founder of the Grey branch of Enville, which died out at the beginning of the XVII century.
