Upington moved to the Cape Colony in 1874 and was appointed prime minister. Prior to that, he was the attorney general, in 1879, during the war he participated in the hostilities in South Africa .
Upington created a military unit known as the “Upington Infantry” and served during the “ 9th War with South Africa, 1877-79 ” for which he received the “South Africa Medal”. The Upington Infantry included about 240 South Africans who fought against the Transkei tribes.
