Biography
Milan Michalek is a pupil of the České Budějovice club. At the end of the 2000/01 season, he made his debut in the Czech Extra League for his native club. At 16, Mikhalek already played stably in the first team, was considered one of the Czech Republic’s most talented hockey players of his year of birth, many NHL clubs claimed it before the draft.
In the 2003 NHL draft, he was selected in the first round under the overall sixth number by the San Jose Sharks Club.
He made his debut in the NHL in the 2003/04 season. Already in the first match, on October 9, 2003 he scored his first goal in the NHL, hitting the gates of “ Edmonton Oilers ”. In the second game on October 11, Mikhalek received a knee injury. After the operation, he began playing in the AHL for the Cleveland Barons . But on January 22, 2004 he again injured his knee. Due to an injury, he missed the rest of the season and the whole next season. In the 2005/06 season, Mikhalek returned to the ice and successfully played for San Jose. The 2006/07 season turned out to be especially successful for him, he scored 66 points (26 goals and 40 assists), setting personal records in the NHL for points and assists in one season.
September 12, 2009 Mikhalek, along with Jonathan Chichu, was exchanged for Dani Heatley in the Ottawa Senators team. Twice in his overseas career he made a hat-trick . On October 15, 2009, in the match against Tampa Bay Lightning , he scored 3 goals (and 2 of them in the numerical minority) and helped Ottawa win with a score of 7: 1. On March 6, 2012, in the match of the same teams, Ottawa and Tampa Bay, Milan Mikhalek scored 4 points (3 goals and 1 assists) and was recognized as the first star of the match, which the senators won 7: 3. It is noteworthy that Mikhalek scored all his 3 goals in the last 8 minutes of the match (at the 53rd, 59th and 60th minutes). In the 2011/12 season, Mikhalek set his personal goal record (35) in one season.
On February 9, 2016, as a result of a large exchange (in which 9 hockey players were involved, in particular Dion Fanef ), Mikhalek moved to another Canadian club, the Toronto Maple Leafs . Due to a knee injury, he was sent to the Toronto Marlies AHL club at the beginning of the 2016/17 season. There he renewed his injury, having been eliminated for a long time.
As part of the Czech team, Mikhalek twice (in 2011 and 2012) became the bronze medalist of the world championships . In total, he spent 54 games for the Czech team, in which he scored 22 points (12 goals and 10 assists).
