Sic

Sic is a Latin word meaning “so,” “in this way,” “exactly so.” Used to indicate that a previous misspelling or unusual spelling is a quote , not a typing error. In quoted phrases, the expression is written in italics. and is taken in parentheses: ( sic ). Sometimes placed in square brackets: [ sic ] - or replaced by (!). Alternative meaning: "I see a mistake, but I write, as in the original." It is also used to indicate the importance of a given place in the text, consent with it, or the ironic attitude of the reader, reviewer [1] .

Do not confuse ( sic ) with ( res ) - this is an introductory word [ clarify ] is used to express disapproval or resentment of the quoted passage.

Another ( sic ) can be used to emphasize the exact transmission of an outdated or unusual expression or to emphasize a mistake, noting its absurdity or irony, or to accurately quote a dubious source, while maintaining the reputation of the citing person or organization. Often, in order to emphasize the grossness of a mistake made, an exclamation mark ( sic! ) Is placed after it. Nevertheless, per se ( sic ) does not express the personal attitude of the citing to the selected material.

It is often mistakenly believed that “sic” is one of the English abbreviations: “spelling is correct” (exact spelling), “same in copy” (also in the manuscript), “spelled incorrectly” (spelled incorrectly), “spelling incompetent” ( clumsy spelling), “said in context” (said in context), “stupid in context” (silly in context) and others [2] , which are actually the backronym of the Latin word sic .

Our offspring <...> returned in winter to Russia from Switzerland, where he was treated for idiocy (sic!). I must admit that he was lucky with luck, so even without speaking about his interesting illness that he was treated for in Switzerland (well, is it possible to recover from idiocy, imagine this? !!), he could prove Russian loyalty proverbs: “happiness is known to a certain category of people!”

In St. Petersburg, it was believed that the “left” Chulkov had a detrimental effect on Tolstoy - Blok wrote about this in 1911: “These days my mother and I (separately) read Al Tolstoy’s new comedy, rapists. A good plan, a good one language, traditions - everything is spoiled by hooliganism, an immature attitude to life, lack of artistic measure. Apparently, now he is poisoned by Chulkov: ridicule (sic! - E. T.) over his own, which could be serious, and incredible positions: a lot in Tolstoy and blood, and fat, and lust, and nobility, and talent ...

Modern usage

Sic use increased significantly in the mid-twentieth century [3] . For example, in US state court decisions up to 1944, the Westlaw Sic database appears 1,239 times; from 1945 to 1990 it was already 69168 times [4] . As the main factor in increasing the amount of use of this designation, researchers call irony or hidden mockery, which is masked with Sic.

The “unreasonable” use of Sic created controversy that led some editors, including bibliographer Simon Novell-Smith and literary critic Leon Edel , to oppose it [5] .
