Geography
The river is 14 km long [2] . It originates in a swampy forest area south of Kotlas [3] . In the upper reaches flows north and northeast through a network of land reclamation canals, then turns to the northwest. The course is quite calm, the course is winding. In the lower reaches, it flows through the territory of the city of Kotlas. It falls into the short right channel of the Northern Dvina in the city.
Kotlashanka is the lowest tributary of the Small Northern Dvina (just below the mouth of the Kotlashanka, the Small Northern Dvina merges with Vychegda , forming the Great Northern Dvina).
In the middle reaches, the Kotlas Airport is located on the right bank, and the Konosha - Vorkuta railway crosses the river at its southern edge.
History
The lower reaches of the river have been inhabited by people since the end of the XIV century , since it was at this time that the Zyryan settlement Pyras appeared at the mouth of the Vychegda river by archaeological finds. Subsequently, in its place grew first the village, and then the city of Kotlas.
Etymology
It is typical to assume that the name of the river came from the city, however, some scholars believe that the river was originally named. The mention of the toponym Kotlas for the first time dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, and in one of the letters the name of the settlement is indicated along a nearby flowing river. Thus, it is possible that the original name of the river was Kotlas (Kodlas), and the river was renamed in a diminutive form in order to avoid homonymy .
