The Trent River, after which the city is named, was known among the local Indians as Sangichiwigewonk , "fast flowing." She received her English name in honor of the Trent River in England.

Europeans settled in this area in the 1780s, however, until the establishment of the village of Trenton in 1853, the area changed its name several times, various settlements appeared and disappeared here. Trenton began to grow due to its port location and local wood industry.

In 1929, the construction of the Trenton Air Force Base of Canada began. The base caused an increase in economic activity in the area during the years of the Great Depression, World War II and beyond. The base is currently Trenton's largest employer. The base is a small airport and the National Aviation Museum of Canada .

In 1980, Trenton received the status of a city. January 1, 1998. Trenton was merged with the village of Frankford and the townships Murray and Sydney in the municipality of Quint West, in which it is the most populated and largest of the areas.
