Species and distribution

Six species are distinguished in the genus of thick-tailed marsupial mice, all of which are endemic to Australia :

  • Sandstone marsupial mouse ( Pseudantechinus bilarni ). It lives in the Northern Territory on the Arnhem Land Peninsula.
  • Tailed marsupial mouse ( Pseudantechinus macdonnellensis ). It lives in the central part of Australia ( Western Australia , Northern Territory , South Australia , small populations in Queensland ).
  • Pseudantechinus mimulus . It occurs not in the territory of Queensland and in the Northern Territory.
  • Kimberly marsupial mouse ( Pseudantechinus ningbing ). It lives in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
  • Pseudantechinus roryi . It lives in Western Australia.
  • Wolly marsupial mouse ( Pseudantechinus woolleyae ). It lives in Western Australia.

Distributed in most of Australia. They inhabit, as a rule, in rocky or arid regions [1] .

Appearance

Outwardly resemble ordinary mice , with which they nevertheless have no family ties. They are small in size. The length of the body is from 95 to 105 mm, the tail is 75-85 mm. Weight from 20 to 45 g [1] . The body is covered with thick hair. The color of the back is gray-brown, the belly is gray-white. At the base, the tail is thickened: in this part are deposits of fat [1] .

Lifestyle

Thick-tailed marsupials lead a terrestrial lifestyle. Activity, as a rule, occurs at night, however, they can take sun baths during the day. They feed on insects [1] .

Reproduction

In the western part of the range, the breeding season falls on August-early September, in the eastern part - in June-early July. Pregnancy lasts 45-55 days. In the progeny of 5-6 cubs, which the mother feeds with milk for 14 weeks [1] .
