Louise Charlotte is the eldest daughter of the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin Friedrich Franz I , who later received the title of Grand Duke, and his wife Louise , Princess of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg.
For some time in 1795, Louise Charlotte was engaged to King of Sweden Gustav IV Adolf , but he broke off the engagement, choosing the Russian Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna as his wife. Louise Charlotte in 1797 married the Crown Duke of Augustus from the house of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg , to which her mother belonged. Thus, Louise Charlotte and her husband shared a great-grandfather Frederick II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and great-grandmother Magdalen Augustus Anhalt-Zerbst .
Louise Charlotte died before her husband entered the ducal throne in Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. They had a daughter, Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg , who later married the Duke of Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeldsky .
