Writing and Publication History

Hemingway went to Europe as a foreign correspondent for the Toronto Star newspaper . He settled in Paris and there, encouraged by Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound and others, decided to become a writer.

In 1956, Hemingway found a suitcase, which he left in the basement of the Ritz Hotel in Paris many years ago. There was a notebook in his suitcase in which he wrote notes about his life in Paris. He processed and transcribed these notes. While working on the book Dangerous Summer, Hemingway used these notes in the final part of the draft book.

The book was created after the death of the writer from these notes by his fourth wife and widow Mary Welsh Hemingway . The materials were edited and published in 1964.
