Biography

Originally engaged in painting ; his impressionist paintings are seascapes ; he kept a passionate love of the sea for life. In 1870 he sent essays from London on Danish painting. Rotating in the English working circles and among the French Communards, Drachman was carried away by revolutionary ideas, as evidenced by the poems: "English Socialists", "King Mob", "On the Plain of Satari", included in the first collection of his poems ( 1872 ).

Drachman’s democratic sympathies were clearly reflected in his stories from the life of Danish sailors (“Paa Sömands Tro og Love” and others). In written in the 1870s . novels and tales, and even lyric poems, Drachman is a faithful follower of Brandes, one of the pillars of political and literary radicalism . Drachman hates the modern social system, but, having lost hope that “the last hour of the European bourgeoisie has struck,” he turns his back on reality. Drachman rebels against the hegemony of realism; in the form of a protest against him, he writes two plays in which fairy tales are romantically interpreted.

In 1883 , in the book Skyggebilder (Silhouettes), Drachman openly breaks with modernism in art, the mental flow in Denmark , led by Brandes, and tries to create a special movement based on the idea of patriarchal nationalism ; his work of that time is imbued with national pathos . However, in the 1890s , Drahman’s new departure from modern society was planned, expressed in ignoring the existing moral standards: the image of a seductive woman (courtesan Sheitan in Turkish Rococo, Suleim in the Song Book and the chantant singer Edith in the novel Forskrevet) becomes Drahman central; the poet surrenders to the cult of voluptuousness and hysterical ecstasy; “Intoxication and war” are glorified as the beneficent forces of life.

The main faces of the works of this period are people standing on the other side of the “society”: medieval vagantas , London prostitutes , wandering schoolchildren , etc. Today, a strict sentence is pronounced: the culture of the 19th century deceived people, led the older generation to “frivolous romanticism, ” and the best representatives of the young generation - to the "corrosive irony." So Drachman darted from socialism to patriarchal nationalism and from the latter to moral anarchism .

In the last years of his life, he wrote several lyric melodramas and poems, imbued with resignation . Drachman is one of Denmark's largest lyric poets. As a prose writer and dramatic writer, he is much weaker; his novels and dramas are valuable only insofar as they are saturated with lyricism. Their world is a romantically accepted Middle Ages .
