Career

Club

"Standard"

A pupil of the standard Liege school, made his debut at the club on September 17, 2006, substituting for 89 minutes instead of Stephen Defour . He gained a foothold in the club in the 2007/08 season, forming, together with Stephen Defour and Maruan Fellaini, a bunch in the center of the club's midfield. At the end of the season, he received the prize of the best young soccer player and the prize of the soccer player of the year - the Golden Boot . In the following season, his goal from the 11-meter mark helped Standard to win the national championship. On August 30, 2009, Witsel in a match against Anderlecht inflicted a dangerous injury on Marcin Vasilevsky : an open leg fracture occurred in the Pole [2] [3] . Witsel was immediately removed from the field, he was disqualified indefinitely, and threats from the Anderlecht fans and Polish teams began to come to him [4] . Only after the proceedings at the Royal Football Association, the period of disqualification was reduced to 8 games [5] .

July 13, 2011 signed a contract with Benfica [6] . He entrenched at the base and became an almost indispensable player. In the Portuguese championship he played 32 matches and scored three goals.

"Zenith"

September 3, 2012 signed a contract with Zenit until the summer of 2017 [7] . He made his debut as part of the St. Petersburg club on September 14 in a match with Terek , in which his team lost 0-2. In the match, he was injured and dropped out of the game for some time. Quite harmoniously joined the team and became the main player. On November 30, in a match against Spartak , he took a double, scoring his first goals for Zenit [8] .

On February 26, 2015, in the Europa League match against the Dutch PSV [9], Axel Witsel held his hundredth match for Zenit [10] . October 24, 2015 scored the 1000th goal of Zenit in the championships of Russia [11] . He could go to Juventus, but the transfer did not take place. Soon, Witsel announced that he would not renew the contract with Zenit and would either go to Juventus or some other club.

Tianjin Quanjian

On January 3, 2017, Witsel was announced to join the Tianjin Quanjian Chinese club [12] .

"Borussia Dortmund"

On August 6, 2018, Witsel transferred to Dortmund Borussia , signing a contract until 2022 [13] .

Belgium national team

In the national team under 17 years old, the football player went to the 2006 European Championship . He also performed at the European Youth Championship 2007 , where his team won a ticket to the Beijing Olympics .

On March 26, 2008, in a match with Moroccans Witsel made his debut in the main national team and scored a goal.

In the qualifying round for the 2014 World Cup, the football player spent all 10 matches on the field. Witsel is a key player in the middle of the field.

At the 2018 World Cup, Axel became the bronze medalist of the tournament with the national team.

Personal life

By mother Belgian [14] . Father, Thierry Witsel, originally from the island of Martinique , overseas territory of France , he is a football player and football coach. Rafaella Szabo - Axel's girl - April 1, 2015 gave birth to a daughter Mai-Li. On June 13, 2015 in St. Petersburg, the wedding ceremony of Axel and Raffaella was held. On March 31, 2017, Axel and Raffaella had a second daughter, Evie.

The football player’s nickname is “Chalup”: “This is my nickname from the time of the Standard from Liège. One of the players called me Chalup - this is a small boat made of wood, such as a kayak. And she swims so slowly, relaxed. This is how I walk, how I behave in ordinary life ” [15] .
