Monument to N. K. Roerich in St. Petersburg - opened on November 9, 2010 in St. Petersburg. A monument of Karelian granite 3.5 meters high was erected in the Vasileostrovets garden at the intersection of Bolshoi Prospekt with the 25th line of Vasilyevsky Island . Sculptor V.V. Zaiko and architect Yu.F. Kozhin .
History of the Monument
The project of the monument was created by sculptor Viktor Vladimirovich Zaiko. On April 16, 2002, the Town Planning Council approved the project.
The place for the installation of the monument was not chosen by chance. A significant part of the life of Nikolai Konstantinovich Roerich is associated with Vasilievsky Island. The artist was born on September 27 (October 9), 1874 in St. Petersburg, on Vasilyevsky Island, on the University Embankment . The Vasilyevsky Island is associated with the years of the artist’s teaching and becoming. Here was the gymnasium of K.I. May, where he received secondary education. Then Roerich studied simultaneously at the Academy of Arts and at the Faculty of Law of St. Petersburg University. As a student, Nikolai Konstantinovich participated in the activities of the Imperial Russian Archaeological Society. Also on Vasilievsky Island in the church of the Imperial Academy of Arts was the wedding of Nikolai Roerich and Elena Shaposhnikova .
On February 17, 2006, Valentina Matvienko , Governor of St. Petersburg, signed Decree No. 156 of the Government of St. Petersburg “On the Installation of the Monument to N. K. Roerich”.
