Biography

Old Technion Building

Born in Berlin in an assimilated Jewish family. After graduating from the Higher Technical School, Charlottenburg in Berlin worked as an architect in the public works department of Prussia. In 1906 he was awarded the prize of K.F. In 1910, Berwald was commissioned to build the Technion. Striving for the synthesis of architectural traditions of the West and East , Berwald painstakingly studied the methods of work of Arab stone carvers, as well as the characteristic features of Mediterranean architecture. The complex he created became the first example of modern monumental architecture in Eretz Yisrael , a symbol of the cultural revival of the Jewish people.

In 1924, Berwald finally moved to Haifa, where he became the first professor of architecture in Eretz Yisrael . In the 1920s Berwald reached creative maturity, in his bold projects reflected the search for a national architectural language, the connection of architectural style with the history of the area. Among the works of this period are the Palatine Hotel ( 1925 ) in Tel Aviv , the Anglo-Palestinian Bank in Haifa, as well as the unrealized project of an extensive business center designed for Haifa.

In the years 1929-30. in Berwald's work, the international modern style begins to prevail over local trends, while concrete replaces stone. In the architect’s latest works (hospital in Afula , a pylon house in the vicinity of Haifa), the main attention is paid to convenience and functionality.
