Concertino for Trombone and Orchestra (David)

Concertino for Trombone and Orchestra in E Flat Major , Op. 4 Ferdinand David - one of the first works in European music, specially written for a solo trombone accompanied by a symphony orchestra.

David dedicated his concertina, written in 1837, to his friend trombonist and violinist Karl Traugott Queisser . According to legend, the work appeared as follows. Felix Mendelssohn , who maintained friendly relations with both David and Queisser, promised the latter to write a concert for trombone. However, for a number of reasons, this plan remained unfulfilled, and Mendelssohn proposed to write a concert to David. The young composer followed his advice and soon his work was first performed in Leipzig by Kvisser, accompanied by the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the direction of Mendelssohn.

In 1923, David's concertina was first performed in the United States by Joseph Alshausky and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fritz Rainer . However, after this, the score of this composition was lost and restored to clavier only in 1985 by the Swedish trombonist Christian Lindberg .

Concertino for trombone is considered one of David's most successful compositions, and, unlike most of his other works, is performed and recorded relatively often. Among the trombonists who made audio recordings of the concertina David, Christian Lindberg, Armin Rozin , Brett Baker, Branimir Slokar, Michael Bertnochello, Jürgen Heinel, Karl Lente, Victor Batashov .

Concertino consists of three parts:

  1. Allegro maestoso
  2. Andante marcia funebre
  3. Allegro maestoso
