Biography

Rossi's academic career began at the University of Pisa . Here in 1759 he became a doctor of philosophy and medicine, then from 1763 to 1801 he taught logic as a professor, before in 1801 he received the Department of Natural Sciences with a specialization in entomology, due to which today he is often called the first professor of entomology. His publications in this field, especially Fauna etrusca (1790) and Mantissa insectorum (1792), are considered pioneering in entomology. According to their taxonomy and biological nomenclature, they have retained their scientific significance even today. A significant part of his collection was from time to time owned by Johann Christian Ludwig Helvig in Braunschweig and is today in the Museum of Natural History of the University. Humboldt in Berlin.

In 1790, Rossi published two volumes of Fauna etrusca, in which he described terrestrial arthropods collected in Tuscany. Rossi described over 500 new species of arachnids and insects. After his death, his entomological collection was acquired by the Museum of Natural History of Milan.

In 1793, Rossi was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .
