Biography
Father - Anton Husgafvel (in 1936 changed his Swedish name to Finnish - Salmenkylä) (1900-1980) was engaged in athletics, sprinter. Represented Finland at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 . Later, he was one of the country's best orienteers for veteran groups.
He often visited the forest with his brother Matti and his mother, picking mushrooms and berries during the war, so when he started orienteering in 1945, he did not feel like a beginner. At that time, it was necessary to use rough maps, some of which were made back in Tsarist Russia until 1917. [3] 1950, for the first time, took part in the team competitions of Yukola . A year earlier, he was refused - "Too Young."
Brother Matti (1930-2006) - journalist, engaged in orienteering. The author of the book on the history of the Yukola relay race: "Jukolan Viestin Tarina: 1948-1988." Once at the Finnish Championship, Juhani, his brother Matti and father, all three took first places in their age groups.
Wife Pirkko, an architect by profession, was involved in orienteering and basketball. She was a member of national teams, many times became the champion of Finland. Her brother and father are also orienteers.
Children (three daughters and a son): Hilkka - lawyer, Leena (b. 1958), Veli Matti ( Veli Matti ) and Tuulikki (b. 12.02.1963; Tuulikki ) are professionally engaged in basketball and orienteering. All at various times became champions of Finland. Leena Salmenkylä is the 1979 world relay champion [4] . Tuuliki is a veteran championship winner in 2000 in New Zealand. [five]
Together with her daughter Hilkka owns a law office.

From 1969 to 1972 - President of the Finnish Basketball Association ( Suomen Koripalloliitto ), member of the board, referee. [3]
He helped the Finnish national team make their way to the Olympics at the 1964 European Qualification Tournament in Geneva, which he did. He was a judge at a basketball tournament at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. [6]
Orienteering
National team performance
Juhani Salmenküla as part of the Finnish national team participated in the II European Orienteering Championships in Switzerland. At the individual distance, Juhani Salmenküla showed 17 results, [1] and in the relay team (Juhani Salmenküla, Rolf Koskinen , Aimo Tepsell and Erkki Kohvakka ) won the gold medal, leaving behind the teams of Norway and Sweden.
At the third IOF Congress, which took place in Bulgaria in 1965 , it was decided to hold the World Championships instead of the European Championship (European Championships were resumed only in 2000). The first world championship was held in Finland. Juhani Salmenkyulya showed the 5th time at the individual distance, [7] and in the relay team of Finland consisting of: Erkki Kohvakka , Rolf Koskinen , Juhani Salmenkyuly and Aimo Tepsell took second place, losing to Sweden. Two years later, at the second world championship, the relay team also won silver. Juhani Salmenkyla fled the third stage of the four-stage relay race. [8] The Finnish team led the whole relay, but lost Sweden over the last 300 meters. At that time, the dispersion method was not yet applied and all the teams ran along the same course. [3] At the individual race Salmenküla was 4th. [eight]
Club career
In 1954, with the Helsingin team, Suunnistajat won the Tiomila relay race. This was the first time a foreign team has won the Swedish relay. The next time, when the non-Swedish team became the winners, we had to wait almost 30 years. Salmenkylä ran the final stage. Despite the troubles, such as a broken lantern at one of the night stages, his teammates were able to provide a 25-minute handicap before the final stage. [3]
In 1966, at the Swedish "stage race" O-Ringen, according to the results of 5 days of performances, Juhani Salmenkül became the winner. O-Ringen was held only for the second time and a little more than 600 people participated (in all categories). Currently, it is one of the largest competitions in the world of orienteering, gathering more than 20 thousand participants. As Salmenkyla recalls, there were no generally accepted designations in legends and descriptions were given exclusively in Swedish. Especially for the Finnish guests, a translation was made before the start, but it was so rude that instead of “east”, “west” could be written. As a result, the translation of legends on all subsequent days for the entire Finnish delegation (about 40 people in 10 age classes) was done by Juhani Salmenkyla. [3]
He won the relay championship of Finland several times and won the Yukola relay 7 times as part of the team. Invariably participated in Yukol from 1950 to 2007, having missed only three years.
About ten years was the president of the club Helsingin Suunnistajat, and later an honorary member.
He takes an active part in veteran competitions, has repeatedly participated in world championships among veterans.
