Biography
Born in 1820 in Moscow in the family of Mikhail Andreyevich Dostoevsky, the head physician of the Mariinsky Hospital.
After home education, together with his younger brother Fedor he studied in Moscow hostels of N. I. Drashusov (1833–1834) and L. I. Chermak (1833–1834) [2] . In May 1837, the father took the brothers Mikhail and Fyodor to St. Petersburg and assigned them to the KF Kostomarov preparatory boarding school for admission to the Main Engineering School [2] . M. M. Dostoevsky did not enter the school, as he was erroneously recognized as meditative by medical examination.
He was married to Emilia Feodorovna von Ditmar, from whom he had sons Fedor Mikhailovich (younger), Mikhail Mikhailovich and daughters Catherine, Maria and Barbara.
Together with his brother, Mikhail Mikhailovich was interested in the teachings of the French socialists , became fascinated with Fourierism , was close to the Petrashevsky circle , although he did not take an active part in it. In 1849, he was involved in the investigation of the Petrashevsky case, spent over a month in the Peter and Paul Fortress , but was released. At the invitation of his friend A. P. Milyukov in 1860, he took part in the literary magazine Svetoch , published monthly in St. Petersburg.
In 1861, with the assistance of F. M. Dostoevsky, he began to publish the magazine “ Time ”, which was banned during the Polish uprising in April 1863 for the article “Fatal Question” by N. N. Strakhov .
In 1864, M. M. Dostoevsky began the publication of the Epoch magazine, which served on a par with Time, the main printed organ of the tribesmen , but died in July of that year. The grave of Mikhail Mikhailovich Dostoevsky in Pavlovsk has been lost [2] .
Creativity
In the 1840s, he published several novels in Otechestvennyi Zapiski : “Daughter”, “Mr. Svetelkin”, “Sparrow” ( 1848 ), “Two Old Men” ( 1849 ), “Fifty Years” ( 1850 ), the comedy “The Elder and the lesser one ( 1851 ).
In these works, Dostoevsky cultivated a tradition of fiction , which shortly before was canonized by his brother. In their style, Dostoevsky’s stories are close to “ Poor People ” and “ White Nights ” and are marked by the strongest influence of sentimentalism . Their artistic value is small.
M. M. Dostoevsky left quite a few translations of the European classics: Goethe 's Reynard the Fox (Domestic Notes, 1848), Schiller 's Don Carlos (The Library for Reading , 1848), and so on . The creative heritage (texts of works, translations, journalism and letters) of M. M. Dostoevsky is presented on the electronic resource of Petrozavodsk State University .
