Trans-Kalahari Highway , Trans-Kalahari ( English Trans-Kalahari-Highway , German Trans-Kalahari-Fernstraße ) is a motorway passing through some countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC): Namibia , Botswana , South Africa and Mozambique , as well as dry Kalahari Desert [1] .
Trans-Kalahari is the main food channel supplying the countries of South Africa . Highway planning began with a research trip by James Chapman , who thought through its construction as early as 1850 [2] . Initially, the road was dirt and was called Sand-Pad ( sandpaper, sandpaper ). In the XX century, with further construction, it was covered with tar .
Since 1998, the Transkalahar Highway has been the main communication between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund (port of the Atlantic ) and Maputo (port of the Indian Ocean ). It is also convenient to make tourist trips along the Transkalahar road, because it became much easier to get from Windhoek to Johannesburg with the advent of the Trans-Kalahari: the South road passing through Upington takes much longer [1] .
