Falcon (spacesuit)

The spacesuit "Falcon", operated from 1973 (" Soyuz-12 ") to 1981 (" Soyuz-40 ")
The Sokol-2 spacesuit has been in operation since 1980, starting with the flight of the Soyuz T-2 spacecraft

Sokol is a Soviet and Russian rescue space suit . Serves for additional insurance and protection of astronauts on board the Soyuz spacecraft during its take-off and landing, as well as docking and undocking. The latest modification, Sokol-M, will be used by astronauts on the Federation ship .

  • Used since 1973 , there are several modifications.
  • Manufacturer - NPP Zvezda .

Content

Purpose

This spacesuit is protective, as it is designed to rescue astronauts in the event of a depressurization of a spacecraft. In this, it is similar to the American ACES spacesuit worn by astronauts during take-off and landing of the Shuttle .

The spacesuit "Falcon" is not intended to go into outer space , but can withstand these conditions. The spacesuit is designed to stay in a vacuum up to 125 minutes, which is due to the small on-board oxygen supply and limitations on the thermal regime. In case of depressurization of the cabin, landing must be made during this time.

Modifications

Falcon-KV2

Sokol-KV2 is the current modification of emergency rescue suits for the crew of the Soyuz spacecraft. It was first used on June 5, 1980 in the Soyuz T-2 mission.

Falcon-M

Sokol-M is a reusable spacesuit for the crew of the Federation ship, which can be used at least 10 times. Airtight zipper will be used in the Sokol-M spacesuit, so it will be possible to wear it twice as fast as the spacesuit of the existing modification (in about two and a half minutes instead of the previous five). In addition, the new spacesuit will have the ability to adjust to different parameters of the astronaut’s body, unlike the current modification - “Skolol-KV2” - which are sewn individually for each astronaut [1] . The spacesuit will be manufactured using foreign components (polyurethane films, pressure lightning), otherwise it will not work out reusable. It is possible to develop a spacesuit entirely from Russian components, but in this case it will be designed not for 10, but for one or two flights (Russian-made rubber quickly ages and wears out, germ-lightnings are not produced at all), and will not have the ability to adjust for different height astronauts [2] . The spacesuit was first presented to the public at the MAKS-2019 air show [3] [4] .

  • On March 27, 2019, the chief designer of the Zvezda Scientific and Production Enterprise Sergey Pozdnyakov told the media that the prototype of the new generation emergency rescue suit was made single-layer and consisting of a reinforced film, but it turned out to be not very successful. In this regard, the designers decided to return to the currently used scheme of two shells of the spacesuit - sealed and power [5] .
  • As of August 2019, design and development tests of the spacesuit begin. Currently, one sample of this suit is made; it worked out the technology of combining a polyurethane shell with a power and soft joints.

Expected Events

  • 2020 - autonomous tests of the spacesuit.
  • 2020-2021 - comprehensive tests of the spacesuit (ground with the ship "Federation").
