Biography
Sofia Maria is the daughter of Landgrave Ludwig VI of Hesse-Darmstadt and his wife Maria Elizabeth of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp , daughter of Duke Frederick III of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp .
February 9, 1681 in Darmstadt Sofia Maria married Christian of Saxe-Eisenberg , who at that time was already a widower and father of one daughter. The year before, as a result of the division of possessions with his brothers, he became the first duke of Saxe-Eisenberg . The marriage was left childless, and Christian died, leaving no heir. For the inheritance of Saxe-Eisenberg for many years the conflict broke out between his brothers and their descendants.
The Duchess was described as a very diligent hostess [3] who was keen on spinning. Wearing simple clothes, she herself bought wool in the vicinity.
