Club career

The early years

Davis was brought into football by his father, a native of the Gambia , Kofi Davis. [2] He attended Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts , which he graduated in 2004. During this time, he scored 29 and 30 goals in junior and senior seasons, respectively. After that, he played for Boston College for three years. In the last season, Davis scored 15 times in 16 games. During college, he also played for the Westchester Flames club from the Premier Development League.

Hammarby

Davis was watched at Ajax [3] , however, he signed his first professional contract with Hammarby in December 2006. Charlie scored his first goal for the Swedish club on June 24, 2007 in the Intertoto Cup against KI Klaksvik . In the 2008 season, Davis became a key player in the team, scoring 15 goals in 27 matches.

Socho

On July 10, 2009, Davis moved to Sochaux [4] . In the French championship of the 2009/10 season, he managed to play in 8 matches and score 2 goals. On October 13, 2009, Davis was involved in a car accident, as a result of which he was seriously injured, and missed more than 15 months [5] .

DC United

In February 2011, Davis joined the club MLS “ DC United ” on a rental basis, designed for the season [6] . In the very first match for the club, in the game against Columbus Crew on March 19, he scored twice, replacing him in the 52nd minute. On June 24, he was fined $ 1,000 for a simulation in a match with Real Salt Lake . [7] In 26 matches of the 2011 season, Davis scored 11 goals, most of which came in the first half of the season. On December 1, DSC United announced that they would not activate the buyback option of the player indicated in the lease.

Return to Sochaux

Upon returning to Sochaux, Davis took part in two matches in which he spent 25 minutes on the field and did not score goals. At the end of the 2011/12 season, his contract with the club was terminated by mutual agreement of the parties [8] .

Randers

In the summer of 2012, Davis signed a two-year contract with the Danish Super League club Randers [9] . He made his debut for “horses” on July 22 in a match against Odense .

New England Revolution

On August 8, 2013, Davis was leased to the New England Revolution for the remainder of the MLS 2013 season [10] . He made his debut for the new club on August 17 in a match against the Chicago Fire . At the beginning of 2014, the contract between Davis and the Randers was terminated by mutual agreement, and the player moved to the New England Revolution camp on an ongoing basis [11] . He scored the first goal for the Revs on August 2, 2014 against the New York Red Bulls .

Philadelphia Union

In early August 2016, Davis was traded to the Philadelphia Union [12] . He made his debut for a new club on August 6 in a match against DC United. At the end of the 2017 season , Philadelphia did not renew the contract with Davis [13] .

On March 2, 2018, Charlie Davis announced his retirement as a football player. [14]

Team Career

Davis got into the preliminary application of the US youth team for the 2005 World Championship among youth teams , but remained outside the final composition [15] . In the same year, as part of the youth team, he participated in the Milk Cup . In the final match of the cup, in which the Americans beat the youth team of Northern Ireland with a score of 4: 1, he scored a hat-trick, and at the end of the tournament he was recognized as the most valuable player.

As part of the US Olympic team, Davis took part in the 2008 Olympic football tournament . At the tournament, he played in one match, coming on as a substitute in the game against the national team of Nigeria .

Davis debuted for the first US national team on June 2, 2007 in a friendly game with the Chinese national team . In the summer of the same year, he joined the national team for the America's Cup 2007 , where he entered the field in one match. He scored the first goal for the national team on October 15, 2008 in the qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup against the national team of Trinidad and Tobago . At the 2009 Confederations Cup, he took part in four matches and scored one goal against Egypt in the group stage.

Personal life

On October 13, 2009, Davis, along with two of his acquaintances, drove early in the morning toward Washington , but lost control and crashed into a metal fence, as a result of which the car was torn in half. The accident killed a 22-year-old passenger. Davis himself received numerous facial injuries, fractures of the bones of the right leg and elbow, rupture of the bladder and hemorrhage in the brain [16] [17] . Davis missed the 2010 World Cup due to a disaster.

At the end of July 2016, Davis reported that in the spring he was diagnosed with a malignant neoplasm - liposarcoma , but now he is in remission [18] .
