History
The rock is a symbol of Yosemite and for a long time remained an inaccessible peak. Only in 1875, the first person to conquer her was George Anderson [5] [6] .
A large stone landslide occurred here on March 28, 2009 (about 42,000 m³ collapsed at the top of the Awhiyah Point ) [7] , when hundreds of trees were demolished by a rockfall and a part of the road to Lake Mirror Lake was covered. An earthquake of magnitude 2.5 was recorded [8] .
In 2005, a twenty-five-centovic copper-nickel coin with the image of Half Dome rock and the famous American naturalist John Muir against its background (as well as a California condor and a giant sequoia) soaring in the sky was published in a series of quarterbacks in 50 US states ( 520.4 million copies). [9] .
The rock image is used as a logo by many organizations and companies, for example, the Sierra Club environmental community and the video game developer Sierra Entertainment . And since October 2010, the Half Dome view has been printed on a new driver’s license issued in California [10] .
Tourism
Half Dome Rock is very popular with both ordinary travelers and professional climbers who choose difficult climbing routes. Cases of death of tourists are also noted: in 2006-2009. four people died [11] [12] . The last case when a tourist during a thunderstorm fell off a cliff and crashed to death occurred in 2011 [13] .
On some summer weekends, about 1,000 tourists climb the Half Dome daily (about 50,000 people a year), which is just a 3.5-hour drive from San Francisco [14] [15] . Thousands of people who wish, under the control of the national park rangers, climb the rock, and from the 12 km of the way, the last one and a half hundred meters to the top, they follow a special cable route (created in 1919), holding onto two stretched woven metal ropes [5] .
Such high popularity made the authorities ( en: National Park Service ) announce in 2010 the introduction, starting from the 2011 season, of some restrictions (no more than 400 people per day), and permits to be issued in advance (per week) not in the National Park itself but in National Recreation Reservation Service [16] . Those who try to climb to the top by “savages” without permission are punished with a fine of up to $ 5000 and / or imprisonment for 6 months in prison [17] .
